quickymart: I vaguely remember this on the news, I was in Form 3. What happened to that guy?

No one knows... He was most likely made an example of by the current regime, or made to simply "disappear"..

I hadn't forgotten it, but I'm unsure what difference refreshing my memory would make. I saw it happen on the news.

Perhaps because like the Holocaust, the end of WWI, D-Day (you know, 75 years in a couple of days), the first Moon landing, human achievements need to be remembered otherwise people may not realise the efforts other put before to make sure we don't let all go. We live in troubled times. The way I see it fascism is rearing its ugly head again. Human rights are trampled and people don't realise that we need one person to make a stand and for others to follow.

You don't need to follow the thread if you don't like the message, meaning or even the event.

To me, this thread is important reading for those who claim that the US and China are as bad as each other when it comes to surveillance, human rights, freedom of speech etc - as we saw in the Huawei thread and elsewhere.

Who claims that? I've never seen anybody claim such a thing on GZ.

Seems like a straw-man argument and "whataboutism".

The fact that the US is being influenced by rising fascist / authoritarianism /populism isn't excused by the probability that China is worse.

Every state has its skeletons in the closet. Some not quite to this scale, but Kent State, Bloody Sunday, Parihaka, all show we are all as bad as each other and can't point the finger at a foreign big bad.

Hopefully, by reminding people about it, some will pause to remember and realise how China and similar examples serves as a warning to all of us. Germany didn't start out fascist. America isn't fascist yet. But contempt for democratic institutions and the rule of law can never end well for those who cherish personal freedom and independent thought. China reminds us how fragile those are. I for one vividly recall the uprising and the enormous courage of tank man and many others who have now been disappeared from history. At the very least, we owe them our memories. They deserve much more.

You need to be less selective on your reading. Page 8 on the thread about Google suspending Huawei's access to Android has a few examples. There have been plenty of others in the past.

Putting a label on it doesn't make it untrue

No, that's not the intention. Mentioning the Tiananmen Square events is a way of getting blocked in the PRC.

The intention is to refresh people's memories of events that happened 30 years ago this week.

The OP's embedded twitter link is though, not because of the tank man video, but because twitter is blocked.

The person who posted that video in a tweet claims to live in China, but the intended audience for the tweet is clearly not China. This thread is supposed to be non-political, but @kilorocky appears to be a political troll.

Don't read the thread then, plenty more to look at.

I had to read it in order to find out what it was about.

If you feel the imperative to read a thread is too much to resist then sure go for it, but you can still elect to show some restraint after that by simply not replying - what value did your querulous post questioning the value of the original post add to the discussion?

I, for one, appreciated being reminded of this, and have taken the opportunity to read up to refresh my own memory and understanding.
