I don't think amazon (or anyone else) should ship to NZ at all.

It is not their job to collect tax on behalf of NZ authorities.

I really hope amazon US will stop shipping here.

I think it would be a good idea, there would be such a public outcry the Govt would be forced to back down

Unfortunately some major retailers identify freight-forwarders and prevent you from shipping to them also, so there is always the possibility that Amazon would do that if they were making a conscious decision to block shipping to NZ.

Don't you see, it is forcing foreign companies to collect NZ GST that is killing competition.

How do you think it would work, if every country implemented this system that NZ now demands.

Kiwi exporters would be required to collect tax for every country they export to, the cost would be enormous.

I'm against this in principle.

Best fix would be to remove sales tax altogether..

or we pay sales tax in the country we buy the goods in ...just like when we go on holiday

If the government of countries like ours says "but we don't manufacture enough goods to make it fair!"  Then fix the economy so we do... or just plant trees and ban all plastic... what would i know

Each year and about this time of the year, for more years than I care to remember,  I order a 'Beryl Cook Wall Calendar' from Amazon UK for my wife as a Xmas gift.

If you're not familiar with Beryl Cook then check this  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beryl_Cook

This year, I've hit the 'can't be delivered to your selected address' message for Amazon UK. And again with Amazon US and Amazon AU.

I've now ordered this item from Fishpond.co.nz. I must admit, I've never shopped with this retailer before.... let's see how well their perform.

Expensively. That's how they perform!  And not just a little bit more than the likes of Amazon. But often over double the price.

Its entirely up to the retailer.

If they want to put the effort into selling abroad and take on all the requirements that entails (including taking tax for a foreign country) then that's their call.

I bet you would do it for countries with size and money (e.g the US) as you're going to get a lot of revenue in return. Flip the tables around, if you're an Amazon you're going to look at sales to NZ and probably go "meh, its a rounding error in value...dont bother".
