Guess what your options will be after the country goes silly and passes legislation after the referendum later this year?  None.  Zero. Zip.

Think about that as you vote this year.

Lol. That will definitely stop people smoking marijuana.

Closing the windows hadn’t been suggested before. :-)

Legalised marijuana will mean the OP won’t have a leg to stand on nor negotiation leverage in the future.

The OP doesn't really have leverage anyway. Best case the police wing round for a word, worst case they say "meh"

This won't get solved by "authority" it'll only get solved by negotiation.

My neighbours regularly smoke fish on their BBQ, drifts to our house, can't stand the smell . . .   I suspect they've been trolling.  Should I contact Fisheries?

I think it will be exactly the same situation before and after for the OP. Either way the neighbors are uncooperative.

I think it's worth getting across to them that the kids are getting it a bit. The ideal situation is knowing someone that knows them and communicating on a side channel while maintaining friendly relations. It's surprising what some people will do for kids actually.

The other problem I'll guess is they have only one comfortable smoking area and that's exactly in the wrong position for you. As far as them changing the way they do things that could be their biggest problem and barrier to change

My (Church of the FSM) theology is very much in tune with the Abrahamic religions' doctrine - "thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself".

So - about 30 minutes after the smell had been detected - I'd be inclined to take some plates of really good spaghetti and meatballs over - kind of a metaphorical peace pipe, though a metaphorical vaporiser may be better solution to the smoke issue.

Are you sure that there aren't some nearby plants that need watering near the fence line, it is quite difficult to control where the sprinkler sends the water, if they have a problem with the water tough luck, they could always call the police.....

Writing again in reference to druggies that were renting close to my mum's place, one of them nicked a plant off her deck - one of the other neighbours saw it happen. My mum was so peeved off that she rang the police over that, turns out they seemed to be looking for an excuse to pop on over to these people's place to have a look and someone making a complaint made it easier to do so. Food for thought.

Be cool. Go have a friendly chat and request if they can please smoke in a different area of their outdoor section. You must be really really close to your neighbour to be able to get a strong smell. Snitches get stitches they say so do not involve police.

I agree about the friendly chat advice versus involving the police but I totally disagree about repeating gang mantra about, and even using the loaded term, "snitching". It promotes wrongdoing over rightdoing.

Don't mention weed or dope at all when you talk to them, don't "tell" or threaten them with anything, just ask really nicely if they could please smoke in a different part of their house because the smoke is going into your kids room and your kids don't like it.

If they refuse or are are threatening in return, continue to do it, etc then I might start thinking about getting their landlord or sprinklers or police involved... but starting with a confrontational approach seems just as likely to cause yourself headaches as them.

The neighbour is a bit nuts and is up to all sorts of things. I could tell you something they did in the past and no doubt some of you will have heard of this guys antics in the national media.

They've dumped 5 caravans around their house and rent them out as permanent abodes... it is the people in the caravans who are smoking up...maybe the council can do something about the caravans.

Will try the police too. But, as people say, this activity will be legal soon.

Thanks for the suggestions, no simple answers though.

I don't think there's much of a "maybe" about that - there will be bylaws and it'll be in breach of the Building Act and RMA.

Council might have turned a blind eye to it if you're out in the boondocks and it's not troubling anybody else, but otherwise put pressure on council to do something.

The dope/weed isn't the root of your problem - would be far worse / dangerous to your kids if they were drunks or meth heads.

If asking nicely doesn't work because they are not nice reasonable people, and going to the police isn't an option, going the other way is.

Pay some other large hairy non nice people to *cough* have a quiet word *cough*
