andrewNZ: Have you tried clearing cookies and cache for giggles?

yeah - hasn't helped

billgates:

Is Amazon Japan shipping to NZ? I thought Amazon has stopped shipping to NZ altogether including US store. Trying to finalise checkout cart for Amazon US or Japan results in no shipping to NZ due to COVID-19.

No, Amazon Japan still don't ship to NZ - but I have family and friends in Japan so I use it for buying gifts etc . . . and also sometimes get stuff forwarded to me.
I think Amazon US started shipping to NZ again last week - at least when I was looking at things last week I was no longer getting the message about reduced product line available for shipping to NZ

just an update on this . . .
I have managed to solve the problem for the amazon.com (US) account but it was pita doing so.
I created a new account with an alternative email address just so I could speak with live chat.

Live chat advised me they couldn't remove 2fa (I need to telephone in to do this) but they could change the phone number used for 2fa.
I have an old phone with a 2 degrees number so we changed it to that  . . . . and it works.
I can receive the 2fa texts on that

So - it does appear that the problem lies with receiving these texts on skinny???

Now that I am logged in I was gonna try and remove 2 factor authentication but even that seems troublesome.
When I click 2 step verification > edit it says "lets get started" and looks like it thinks fa isn't even set up - so I'm a little nervous about making any changes now.  :-)

Now I just need to try and get my Amazon Japan account sorted

Amazon US can remove 2fa without a phone call. I did it about a week ago when my 2fa stopped working. There is a link via one of their help pages.

I've got this sorted for my Amazon Japan account as well now - by having the csr switch the account to my 2degrees number.
Before she did that she tried triggering a voice otp call to my skinny phone but that would not go through as well . . . .
So I'm wondering what else I might be missing from overseas on this phone???

That definitely sounds like a Skinny problem. I regularly get phone calls from Japan on my Skinny phone, but never texts - although hardly anyone in Japan uses them, so their absence might not be indicative of anything.

yeah - I get voice calls from Japan no problem . . . .
It seems like it is more likely some kind of compatibility issue between Amazon's & Skinny's systems.

I had to reinstall Line last night and their text otp (from Japan??) arrived without issue.

Amazon supports other 2fa methods than SMS. I use Authy (Google authenticator). It's works perfectly all over the world.

I'm having the same issue with Spark on Amazon.com since at least a month now. It's infuriating. I am locked out of my account and there is literally no way for me to get in-touch with them, meanwhile I'm still being billed for services that I cannot use or manage.

Is someone from Spark going to look into this maybe?

I recommend you contact Spark. The more people that report the issue the better.

I put in a support request with Skinny and after a first couple of back n forths with them making sure it is not just a handset issue they got back to me today with this . . .

Unfortunately, this is an issue that we have escalated in the past.

Our operations team had a long look into the issue, and determined that we simply are not receiving some international short code SMS into our network.

I recommend you get in contact with Amazon JP, and see if they can escalate the issue on their end, as the issue has been determined to be something to do with the outbound international networks.

I doubt that Amazon will take a serious look into the issue with a few reports coming from users that make up a small part of their business

Skinny / Spark on the other hand prob should take a harder look as Amazon makes up a fairly significant part of NZ eCommerce

Yes, now that I have regained access to my Amazon accounts I have switched to using the Google Authenticator app
It has highlighted a new issue for me now though . . .
both Amazon US and Amazon Japan simply identify themselves as "Amazon" in the app. So, when I try to add Amazon Japan it overwrites the Amazon US authenticator and vice versa. They are not interchangeable so separate authentications are needed for each one, so I'm in the pita situation of having to use two separate authenticator apps

Can Google authenticator be recovered if your phone is lost or destroyed?

If not, go with something that can. Authy is (was) recommended here a fair bit for exactly this reason.

Thanks - I have no idea . . . I'll need to look into this.
I'm new to this whole authenticator app thing

looked into this a bit and have now switched to Authy
It also allows me to have the US and JP Amazon accounts side by side - so that has solved another problem
