Hmm. I might be taking a quick phone snap of the handing over if I'm a similar situation. Especially if some unique or pricey ...

Re handing it straight to the courier driver -- more than once I've been to a post office to drop off a package and been told to take it straight to the courier in the van outside as they've just taken the packages... it's not unheard of to do this

I stand corrected. Tbf I’ve always bought at the counter and the item gets scanned there and then so I assumed everything was scanned before leaving the building.

That's what I usually do. The manager told me to skip the line (because of the prepaid label) and put it on the front desk, they'd always scan it by the time I got home.

I really have no idea what anyone thinks a theft complaint will do. The police will tell you to get lost and stop wasting their time. They don't get involved in commercial disputes.

It would allow the OP to claim on their Home Contents Insurance for a start.

Given $1,300 value, that's worth considering.

The Police may sit on it and do nothing but you're not wasting their time. They will never know that mail is being stolen if nobody reports it.

I would accept that a letter could go missing. I've heard of scraps of paper being found in conveyor belts or sorting machines during maintenance but cardboard boxes don't vanish. If it went into the van but didn't get scanned into the depot that seem more than careless. Maybe NZPost has split its operation into so many different contracting parts they're sitting in a circle blaming someone else.

The problem you have is you have zero proof.
NZ Post have "proof" that is was never accepted by them .
You have zero options unfortunately.

NZ Police will do nothing, even when presented with clear evidence of ongoing mail theft and evidence of those involved (was in the weekends paper)

BUT, keep using the tracking page & keep checking it
Even if its flagged as missing, NZ POST will do nothing if it suddenly gets scanned in somewhere (from experience)

Ive had a missing package, actually scanned into the system & listed as missing , sent back to sender (China) as NZ POST are so hopeless .

Agreed with this, your only option would be to follow said courier driver find where they live and break in and steal your item back if it is still there.

Contents insurance covers items temporarily outside the home not items being sent by courier.

That sounds like an really unfortunate situation to be in. As someone suggested above, it might be still be worth taking NZ Post to the Disputes Tribunal, given the value of the item.

While you don't have any evidence you can point to, to show you handed the package to the courier driver, you can still provide evidence in the form of your own testimony.

Once we're back out of lockdown, you could go speak to a community law centre about this. They might suggest you put down a detailed account of what happened, and perhaps even record it in a sworn affidavit or statutory declaration, which could be included with an application to the Disputes Tribunal.

A community law centre could also give you some advice on what your application should be based on, for example breach of contract or negligence.

I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that because it is missing, that the courier driver has necessarily stolen it. You may still get lucky and have the package pop up somewhere in the system.

Just had a thought

NZ Post say they have no CCTV, but if you get the cops involved they can get CCTV firm any nearby businesses.. Possibly footage of you walking in with the package and walking out without it?

I wouldn't expect anything more from the police than taking a statement and giving you a reference. They're probably not going to ask for CCTV footage and they definitely aren't going to try to obtain a court order to get it.

As @Handle9 said, contents insurance covers items temporarily outside of your home, not items being shipped. On the other hand, NZ Post swears they never received the package, and therefore the item was not being sent by courier. There are essentially two reason to file a complaint. The first is to obtain a reference number and hope your insurance company agrees the item was covered (IMO, despite suggesting this, I think it's unlikely), and two, to ensure any potential theft is recorded and may be used as evidence in the future should a pattern emerge. If crime isn't reported, people will get away with it.
