gzt:
Even so, that kind of humor is unusual for Americans at the top level.
Not really, it was a pretty tame joke.
WS even laughed at first, but JPS didnt look too impressed.

'twas a hell of a whack over a pretty tame joke. Big Will has some issues.
Not gonna lie if someone made light of my SO to my/their face like that I'd probably done more than give him a little slap.

JWR:
If it is real, then I'll be on Chris Rock's side. He was amazingly composed overall. Standup comedians tend to be very tough under pressure.
I agree, I thought he was extremely cool overall about the whole thing. I am not his biggest fan, but I was impressed with him.
gzt: Overall it's good publicity for Smith and his movie imo. I had seen it advertised and forgotten about it. I will be 100% watching it now.
Not seeing how have some who assaults people is good publicity?
Normally studios would be distancing themselves

I'm genuinely surprised how many people don't think smacking someone in the face is within the bounds of an appropriate response here. Please bring your SO's to the next GZ Pizza night so that I can test how far that goes when it's your SO on the receiving end.. Bonus points if they've had public struggles with medical conditions.

I'd have the urge to smack you perhaps, but if I felt strongly enough to do it, I'd like to think I'd ask you nicely, then not so nicely to knock it off, and then if you wouldn't, I'd leave instead.
I mean, it's assault, right? Against the law and all that irrelevant stuff.

I mean good on you for having the self control to do that I guess but I doubt I would. My side hustle is working as a bouncer, I've put up with ridiculous amounts of abuse over the last 16 or so years (record is over 2 hours of a guy standing there 2m away on the footpath bleating on), but I can't honestly say I wouldn't have done what Will Smith did. Insulting me is one thing, insulting my family.. to quote Russell Peters "Somebody gonna get a hurt real bad!"
IANAL, but I do know that hitting someone, even hitting them first, isn't always legally assault (certainly in NZ that's the case). That's before you allow for any jurisdictional allowance for provocation (something NZ no longer has but other jurisdictions do). Also we all know the law can be an ass and almost everyone ignores parts of it from time to time. The average "law abiding" citizen regularly breaks the law in small ways. If punching someone for insulting your wife to her face is illegal, in my book at least, it shouldn't be :-)

It was a joke, a tame joke at that.
If you think violence should have been a response to that, why wasnt there a line of people ready to slap him for ragging on them?
Plenty of comedians have said far worse stuff to/about people in an audience and its not often led to them getting a slap.

Sure, if this happened in a pub or whatever, smash the guy.
But this happened at a Hollywood award show. You have comedians telling jokes and presenting for 'entertainment.'
If you didn't like the joke, confront Chris Rock afterwards.

Imagine if everyone roasted by Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes had their partner rock up and take a swing at him?
A violent and cowardly act by Smith, who looks to me to have self control and self perception issues.
Lias:
I'm sure others will disagree but I take no issue with smacking someone for insulting your wife to her face. Then again I'm a believer in "talk sh*t get hit" and support bringing back duelling :-)
I agree 100%. I think in this case, Rock's joke was in poor taste because Jada Pinkett Smith has alopecia, hence her hair style. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
I thought Smith was very restrained with just one slap. Adjusting his tux as he walked back to his seat was very Bond-like. He should get an extra academy award, for being badass.
