I love hot cross buns, but finding a good one, isn't easy.

It’s very easy. You walk into Mrs Handles kitchen on Good Friday and there they are.

I followed this recipe.

I originally used the Pam’s Rum infused fruit and peel mix but they don’t make that anymore so now just have to use their fruit cake mix. :( it’s not as good.

1 gripe, they start selling them really early, late January I first saw them

This is not correct - I have a date stamped photo I took a few years ago of hot cross buns for sale at Countdown Christchurch Airport...

It was Boxing Day!

This is a serious question. I can't stand them myself. What do people like about them so much?

As others have said, I don't think you can talk generically about HCBs. Overall I like them a lot - but a couple of years ago we bought some cheap no-name ones from Countdown and they were totally underwhelming and abysmal. No flavour at all - quite disgusting. Years earlier when I was working, for a pre-Easter staff shout, we had some quite expensive HCBs from a bakery in Ponsonby Road. They were absolutely fantastic - never tasted HCBs like them. Full of cinnamon spice flavour, raisins or currants and fruit peel. So you often get what you pay for - but it doesn't always work that way.

This year we have had some from Pak n Save and they're not outstanding but not too bad at all - for the price.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

I go for bottoms. Grilled and buttered. The glazed top doesn't work for me.

Must have plenty of spice and not too much fruit, but if you leave out the peel I'm not interested.

I guess you don't like fruit cake either...

I loathe fruit cake.

Supposedly Daily Bread (also on P Rd) do a great sourdough HCB, but its 6 for $20.

I'm currently eating buns I made on the weekend using the Miann recipe they released during 2020 lockdown. Its packed with spices. https://miannchocolatefactory.com/blogs/news/the-easter-that-didnt-happen-miann-2020

Sorry. Doesn't appeal at all. Maybe it's something in my genes. Over the years I have sampled different kinds of fruit bread from different sources. I prefer my fruit fresh and natural.

I dont like HCB's with peel in them.
Just why, is peel a way to use up whats otherwise garbage ?

Otherwise , add enough sugar(in some form) and most things are a tasty treat.

During and after toasting - Smell, Taste and the fact that they are ALL MINE because the rest of the family don't care for them.

But don't get me started on the chocolate etc. ones....

I like the flavour of fruitless hot X buns but don't like fruit ion breads etc, so always go for the fruitless varieties.

I quite like the novelty chocolate ones too.

It's the combo of savoury, spicy and sweet that I enjoy - as long as they're good ones.

And then there is the Clootie Dumpling, the ultimate for a Scottish Coronary Breakfast, a slice fried in butter with a sunny side fried egg on top :)

One reason would be because they are taken away and given to you at one certain time of the year, giving you some kind of "special" effect. Also the butter makes it about 100% better tasting.

Some people simply don't like the fruit and will simply never eat any baked goods with fruit, that may be part of your answer as well, depending.

As a kid I liked the smell of them, but never liked the peel and junk they always seemed to add to them.

These days it is spices and sultanas - you would have to look hard to find ones with peel.

Peel is not pleasant - one of the reasons people dont like those rich fruit cakes so much.

The Cookie Time ones are actually good. An actual cross-over that I like. The Pics ones are OK but not in the same league.
