Elton John cancelled his Saturday night show and Laneway Festival just got cancelled.

Mayor Wayne Brown was asked about how well Auckland was prepared and brings up Wellington.

Asked whether Auckland had been sufficiently prepared for such an emergency, Brown countered with a reference to the capital city.

Hill: “New Zealand’s biggest city … This level of inability to cope is terrifying, isn’t it?”

Brown: “It’s definitely worrying. But this is an unprecedented event. It will be interesting to see just how well prepared Wellington is when the earthquake strikes.”

Not sure how people in Wellington and Christchurch would feel about this.

Family friend a few streets over has lost everything, water ended up 1.8m high in their house. Luckily someone was nearby to help them evacuate (both late 80s and low mobility).

We have bought a house but don't settle until March, a friend drove past and said there was a river of water going into the garage and out through a room on the other side of the house. Vendors' responsibility to remediate but now I worry about whether there is time to do that and the quality of the repair...

i'm surprised at how bad its been as it didn't look all that bad on the rain radar.

however brydewyns got closed, water was pouring across the road when i went through which i've not seen before. traffic diverted through mangawhai which causes other issues. SH1 dome valley closed, SH1 warkworth closed, sH16 closed in 2 places (not uncommon). so northland was cut off for a while.

it was almost flooding on the flats when i got home, in fact it wasn't that bad. the odd thing was a lot of water in places that normally didn't flood but not much in the usual spots. i wonder if there was small storm cells going through. we had that at work a few months back and one shed got flooded as every gutter over flowed.

got home, noticed water coming up out of the ground. dug that out today and found a micky mouse storm water connection. someone had fitted some drainage coil and used a milk bottle as a Y connection. so did a quick and dirty patch.

forecast is for a week of rain to come.

bye pool 2 - YouTube

The pool is stuffed. At that level, the silt and water get in behind the vinyl and cause it to lift etc.

Hope this isn't too dumb a question, but... water damage to a pool?

To be fair it was a stupid question. How well prepared is any city in the world to get three months' rain in a day?

Was clarified further down - water pressure blew out the liner.

Deflection and whataboutism at its finest right there. So much for "Mr Fix-it" coming in to fix everything and save the city (and in his mind, possibly the world) 🙄

25°C and sunny/humid on the Shore. No excess water laying around where I am and no rain whatsoever - but I believe there's more to come, possibly tonight or tomorrow. Yay.

In a country that has just had it's warmest, wettest winter on record and warmest year on record, both in 2022, it's not unreasonable to ask how well prepared we are for extreme weather events.

Instead, his answer to a Wellington based journalist was to mock Wellington's vulnerability to earthquakes.

Auckland needs a new Mayor. That press conference performance was poor to say the least. End of story.

Is it in a flood zone?. I am wondering if this is considered a 1 in 100 flood event or higher.

Fully agree with you. Speaking of which: https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/simon-wilson-when-auckland-needed-him-most-where-was-wayne/BA3TLY23R5AQ5H4CH24ABENR64/ (paywalled)

A rather scathing review of Mr Brown during the flood yesterday and the fact he was all but invisible until (very) late last night. Apparently he was trying to have a game of tennis but it was rained off.

https://thespinoff.co.nz/politics/27-01-2023/where-is-wayne-brown?itm_source=spinoff-homepage-layouts&itm_medium=card-1 (a non-paywalled writeup from The Spinoff)

Of course, we're predicted to get heavy rain again tomorrow, so I imagine this time he'll be off playing golf. Or something.

His press conference yesterday was profoundly unimpressive.

Clearly someone on his comms team had underlined and bolded the word immediately.

The contrast to the guy running the civil defense response was stark.
