Good point. I should mention that like @Senecio I am connected with Fisher & Paykel so am biased. These are nice:

The single best thing you can do for the planet is - don't have any children.

You're welcome. Does that mean I can buy a twin turbo V8 truck because my wife and I chose not to have any kids?

Absolutely. It's carbon footprint will be tiny compared to that of any offspring.

I mean you're not wrong but the second best thing is kind of implied there.

Unfortunately when you are old and infirm, there'll be nobody to look after you and you will have a long sad and lonely end of life.

There’s a what are you doing for climate change thread somewhere, but it’s massive. This thread will be a bit more generic. I was thinking of creating the same yesterday

I’m curious what you lot think of the subject. There’s a number of rather vocal deniers and probably those that are quiet deniers too. Hopefully we can have some constructive commentary from both sides.

Personally I’m trying to remain optimistic but remembered the other day that the ocean is supposed to be a good equaliser of global warming by increasing algae for example which soaks up carbon. Clearly that’s not working - I don’t know, have we reached peak algae levels?

When I was putting plants into a greenhouse, after a google search I’m told the maximum temperature a plant will grow at is 32 degrees. What then should that be our normal everyday temperature?

You're not on Atlantis anymore, Duncan Idaho.

I read somewhere that if we stopped emitting right now, it will take 50 years to roll back. In my mind, it will be 50 years before we start making deep and meaningful changes, more than likley as the cheap coal and oil is harder to get and more costly. We all want change but we dont want it to cost, thats the issue.

The ocean sucks up carbon. But as it warms it expands, so you have a double effect of polar melt and expanding volume of warmer water. Then the ocean becomes acidic as the marine life has less oxygen due to warmer water, they die, decompose and you have a slightly toxic environment. The water flows around the globe, driven by temperature differences (same deal as wind with high and low pressure areas) as the globe warms, the temperature differential reduces, so less water movement. Theoretically if it stopped moving it would become stagnant

This scared the cr** out of me. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-07-24/antarctic-sea-ice-levels-nosedive-five-sigma-event/102635204

Havent read that but will. less ice means less solar rays reflected away from Earth, so more heat retained, causing more melt. The Tipping Point often referred to I believe is based on that, as the effect feeds on itself
