I think it's sensible and logic. Otherwise people will wait in the middle of the road, instead of waiting at the lights like now.

That it's illogical.

When turning left, you normally don't have to give way to anyone. Except in the situation when this specific rule applies.

Further, our road code has long had the "Right-Hand Rule" which means that everybody turning right, gives way to all other traffic. Except in the case where this specific rule applies.

As you can see, this rule creates two exceptions and that makes it illogical. Which is why every other country has dumped it, except for us. QED.

That is the theory. But in practice, what happens is this:

1) Person about to turn left sees someone approaching, who wants to turn right.
2) Person about to turn left waits.
3) Another person is coming straight ahead behind person who wants to turn left.
4) Person coming straight ahead cannot get through so he waits.
5) Person wanting to turn right sees person coming straight ahead behind person who wants to turn left, so he waits too.

Result:

- Everybody waits for everybody else until someone plucks up courage to make the first move.
- All too often, 2 people decide to make a move at the same time, and CRASH...

I've seen the situation where everybody waits happen so often during the past 23 years that it's not funny. Whereas, if this rule was never introduced, what would happen is:

1) Person who wants to turn left does so.
2) Person who wants to turn right waits for person coming straight ahead to go past and then turns right.

FINISH! 2 moves instead of 5.

Now will anybody tell me why this second scenario doesn't make a lot more sense than the first one which we are currently stuck with ???

In Malaysia, there's "turn left if the traffic is clear" even at red light. It helps with alleviating traffic build-up unnecessary.

I do think the driving age should be raised as well, and legal drinking age be raised to 21.

Internet is my backyard...

bad idea. too many people will be confused. there will be lots more accidents while people get used to it.

about the 15 year olds being denied licences, ah i agree with the points made here:

The changeover in Victoria was a very straight forward process and despite the claims it would potentially increase accident rates in the short term it actually resulted in an immediate reduction in accidents at intersections.

I agree the right hand give way rule should go, given the high number of immigrants and tourists who arrive daily in NZ and immediately start to drive with absolutely no idea about the rule. Even if they were to be told when they bought/hired a vehicle, the chance this would override years of driving practise is slim.

My observation is that it is a rule which is quite often ignored (maybe in ignorance) and is inefficient when it is observed.

I want to see a lot more no right turns, and make it so you are not allowed to turn right if in doing so means that there is no room for straight ahead cars to get past while waiting.

The old rule should go. NZ is the only country in the world with it. I see tonite that it will take $3mil to change the rule. $2Mil for advertizing which I can see but $1mil to change road signs and road markings. I though that this rule was only used at non controlled intersections..

Its also used when you are traveling towards a car with the same sign you have.

Thats another problem I have is that you cant tell what other signs are at intersections easily. At least the US with their 4 way stops have a 4 way sign on the post so you know.

Old-eyes there are still a lot of man hours, cost of signs, and paint etc.
I assume that some traffic lights would need to be changed, where there are two lanes, and one is a left only, the other is right and straight through traffic. So they would want to paint those too.

I dont see that 3 mil to change over is expensive? thats stuff all per person in the country and if it means that I dont get stuck behind hesitent useless drivers all the time its well worth it.

you could keep the age at 15 if they restricted the car you could drive, nothing over a 1300 untill you were 18, and then only cars with no modifications or turbos untill 21. how many times when you see a young person killed the car is never a plain toyota starlet, or similar ,its some souped up rocket car that the driver cant control.

and that giveway to your right rule still causes trouble even now, i still wait for the person to stop before i go , i have just had to many close calls with the person not giving way.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

I think they should keep the driving age at the current level but make it compulsory for everyone to complete an advanced driving school. Saw it on Top Gear (backed up here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Driving_licence_in_Finland)

That way people know how to drive!

Change in the give way rules are fine, nearly everyone ignores the current uncontrolled t-intersection rules anyway (where the person turning right out of an uncontrolled intersection has right of way)

To add my two peneth worth, I will be glad to see the back of the right hand rule. It provides too many variables and although people waiting in the middle of a busy road is not great, the potential for an accident is far greater if everyone is not sure who can go. Besides if the through traffic is busy the car turning left still has right of way anyway and the right turning car still ends up stuck in the middle of the road. Also this rule change will not affect traffic lights and controlled intersections (signs, road markings etc..). The rule is only relevant at uncontrolled intersections when there are no other forms of instructions. Who ever thought that a rule (designed in Victoria because of the peculiarity of turning across a tram track in the middle of the road( and subsequently ditched)) where you have the right of way over somebody traveling on they're side of the road was a good idea should have they're head examined....

In many cases the driver is in the family 2nd car which is a Starlet or Laser or Mazda 323. They still go fast enough to get killed in.

Turn on left I have dealt with many times in the USA. It really works well and ever since using it have wished we had it here.
Right hand rule.. I don't see any great advantage of either but it does not make sense to be the only country with it so scrap it. We have enough people that learned to drive out side of NZ on the roads that it just makes it more dangerous.
As of the age change for licenses I agree with someone earlier. Would rather see more effort go into teaching people how to drive then raise the age. Make it harder to get a license.
