Best Indian in Auckland, IMHO, is Satya @ 271 K Road.
(Website is Firefox only?!?)

My recommendations!

Entree

Dahi Puri - "Originated in Rajasthan, a well balanced mix of yoghurt, boiled potato and chick peas with tamarind chutney and fresh ground roasted spices topping- really yummy. Complex ingredients awakens the redundant taste buds of the tongue. Regulars hate to share this dish."

Masala Dosa - Potato and onion curry wrapped in dosa with sambar & coconut chutney

Mains:

Satya Special Chicken Curry - "Soft boneless chicken cubes cooked in soya sauce, vinegar with liberal ginger pieces and green chillies. Mainly dry curry. Try once to come back."

Chicken Palakura -    Spinach cooked with chicken cubes, mild or hot

Dal Makhni -   Black lentils cooked in yummy & creamy gravy & ginger topping

Delicious indeed!

Cheers,
Joseph

Bugerfuel is a favourite, as to why there are NO south island locations but they have opened outlets in Australia, Saudi, and United Arab Emeriates beats me.. Meanwhile.. Reels Gourmet Burgers in Stoke Nelson is as close as i can get :).  Redstar in Wanaka is up there in terms of quality/value as well

While in Christchurch on a Geekzone piss up, some of us ate at www.burgersandbeersinc.co.nz it was brilliant! Only thing that let us down was the scenery... someone reliving the alcohol they drank only hours before ;)

Favorite place to eat? For me at home, nothing like a Roast pork or lamb with baked potatoes and then my very own made up desert: Well actually ex - wifes but i secretly tell everyone i thought of it. lol. Really easy to make and damn nice as long as you like a rich taste.

2 packets of gingerbread biscuits
2 cans of pineapple (cut) (sugar cans not the sugar free cans)
2 bottles of cream

pour the pineapple juice into a bole and soak the ginger biscuits in it until they are soaked enough but not to much otherwise they will break.

Stack the biscuits in 2 or 3 rows on a large plate.

Wipp up the cream

Add cream all over the biscuits the more cream the better.

place the pineapple cuts over the cream.

Your cake should look like a small mountain, looks don't matter as this will be eaten anyways!

Place in fridge for about 3 hrs

Enjoy. Can be eaten without anything else added as the ginger gives all the flavor your need, otherwise if you must it goes well with icecream. :D

Ahhh, yes, I remember that. I didn't actually eat anything there at the time because I'd had so much to eat back at Spagalimis, but I'm keen to try the food there some time. It's definitely a novel idea to have an establishment that's a cross between a diner and a bar.

I can't imagine putting in the effort to do all that, but damn it's making my mouth water.

Hamilton:

Tuk Tuk. nom nom nom.. If you like it hot get a Devil Rice extra hot. Not quite as hot as furious chicken below but still packs a decent punch when asked for extra hot. People who do not like powerful chilli are advised to try something else on the menu :-)

Khmer Satay Noodle House: Eat here at least 3 times a week if not more. Simply the best tasting soups, rices and stirfrys i've ever found. I have heard that some of the franchises outside Hamilton are not so good, but the one here is fucking brilliant. Personal favourites are Chicken/Combo Noodle Soup, Satay Chicken Burger, and Chicken/Combo Khmer Fried Rice, but I'm slowly experimenting my way through everything and havnt found a dish I dont like yet.

Burgerfuel Victoria St

TA:

Lemon Grass Furious chicken rocks my world. Described on the menu as (HOT x HOT) and the blurb makes mention of it being a good job the fire station is nearby. As standard it's hot, When asked for extra hot it will melt your brain.

Kiwi Pies
: Damne nice pies. Not the best I've ever had but certainly up there, and I'm a bit of a pie snob (if it comes in a packet, its probably shite)

Here are some of my picks for Christchurch :)

Burgers and Beers:
http://www.burgersandbeersinc.co.nz/ - Bloddy epic burgers, and they sell Beer too :P - They are also open at nights which is awesome.
178 High St
Christchurch
New Zealand

Noodle Canteen: I love the hot-box, and reading their menu which is in "Engrish" these are all over in NZ.

Krishna's Vegetarian Cafe: These guys put on a mean 4 course meal for $10 - Mostly Vegetarian Indian food but they also do the likes of Vegge Burgers, Pizza etc. Plus they make awesome Coffee too!
602 Colombo Street
(at St Asaph Street, central location)

Raetihi Pies (was Clowns Cafe)
Not sure if it's still in Raetihi - heard it closed - but now in Wanganui Tongue out
Couldn't find the address either but it's between 160-170 Victoria Ave in Wanganui (opp. Subway)

Went there last school holidays and the pies are AWESOME! They're trucker sized pies (450-500g), heaps of different fillings - but get in fast as they sell out quick! Because they're so big they can't enter the best pie comp - they would SO win it though...
