Yes but On Demand is still showing the stuff that has already been shown here. I suspect that the OP and myself want to see stuff that is shown in the US and UK within a month of it being shown there not 6 ~ 24 months if ever here..

I mentioned that but probably wasn't clear enough. Me too.

So, anyone know what the delay is between a series/episode showing on U.S network tv and the series/episode appearing on iTunes U.S?

It seems like a big jump in the business model to offer recent U.S shows at the same time here. Most likely the whole rights auction/negotiation cycle revolves around the concept of regional/local seasons and local programme planning based on that. No reason it can't be done tho.

This is being done now.  The new season of True Blood is 3 episodes old in the US and is starting on Prime on the 18th.  Not sure if it will be digital via iSKY.

Would be great if TVNZ and mediaworks would learn from Prime/sky

I'm not too fussed about the US/NZ delay (although it is irritating), what is the most annoying is that Australia & New Zealand can't keep stuff in-sync and it does lead to some quite crazy situations such as:

NCIS:

Season 7 started airing ~Feb 2010 (although I missed all bar the first episode (which I watched in Australia) due to moving back to NZ)

Season 8 started airing in NZ three weeks ago  minus a Season 7 DVD release prior to the start (which really stuffs up continuity).

A Region 4 DVD was released in Australia for Season 7 last week (I think), which can easily be imported into NZ, MightyApe shows a couple more weeks for an NZ release.  The Region 4 DVD for Season 8 is due to be released in Australia in about a month I think.

So, in a few weeks, I could easily & cheaply import Season 7 & 8 from Australia legally (although I can't resell it until I apply for a classification label) and do TV3 out of advertising audience.

Same is going to happen for Nikita (UK Blu-ray release in September, playable in NZ/AU well before TV2 will get finished with the current season), same happened for Scrubs Season 9 (about a 3-4 month delay at least from the Australia DVD release).

Now, if only TVNZ/Mediaworks/Sky/Others would put their heads together w/ content owners and create a Hulu type site for NZ.  Hulu US is US$10(NZ$12)/mo (not sure if it's with or without advertising) I'd be happy to pay a good $15-$20 NZD/mo for an NZ type service.  The only problem is the latency in getting it to air.

TV2's defence is published at http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=125051397575953 where they claim they delay some shows to save us from hiatuses that US networks have, I like hiatuses as long as they tell people about them, surely they can commission cheap NZ content (mini-movies, comedy type shows etc) as fillers.

I can understand BSA requirements, but these days distributors should be producing content with censorship requirements in US/UK/AU/NZ in mind (anyway, I hear the Networks/Censors in the US are pretty strict anyway, just listen to DVD commentaries).

My 2cents anyway...

jonb: Against the terms and conditions doesn not equal illegal though..

I would be very keen on setting up a netflix account using VPN, just haven't got around to sorting it out yet.  maybe when the Copyright bill comes into force...

Unlicensed copy is copyright violation nomatter how you dress it up. If you violate the itunes terms the copy you get is no more legit than one you get off TPB, as they are both unauthorized by the licenseholders.

I don't mind not having the most recent up to date episodes available to buy in digital format.

All i want to be able to do is buy (in digital format) anything currently available to buy on DVD.

I would spend far more money on tv shows/movies if they were offered in digital downloadable format.

It will happen one day because it's the way of the future.... how long it takes the industry to realise that is anyone's guess!

You can only buy something that you can resell. None of the online services I have looked at meet that criteria so IMO dont deserve to be called buying.

However them saying "Pay money for a license that we can revoke or change at anytime with no warning" doesnt have the same warm fuzzy feeling as "Buy now" so I can see why they abuse the term. If there is no ownership, there is no buying.

(And PS... Amazon UK has free shipping to NZ for now - so you can get that Nikita Bluray for probably about $50 - and Whitcoulls wonders why they're going out of business...)

It's not just the local networks, the producers are a royal pain too.  Just look at how there's all this coverage of BBC's "groundbreaking new anti-piracy initiative" - actually releasing the content

I use Astrill's VPN service. Witopia is another good VPN service that I used previously but Astrill was cheaper and offers some nice geeky features in it's GUI. Best thing about netflix is that they accept paypal so I don't have to worry about a US credit card.

Pro Tip - Once you have started watching a movie or tv show on netflix, you can then exit the VPN software and let your NZ ISP do the rest of the buffering. Speeds up the movies and tv shows and Netflix does not checks for IP once the movie or tv show has started unlike Hulu for which the VPN connection has to be on for the entire length of the movie or tv show.

Do whatever you want to do man.

That this may be the way of the future?

Also what is the legal status of setting up a VPN to get content from somewhere like NetFlix? I guess it isn't actually pirating and you are paying for it.

Is it one of those things there kind of isn't yet legislation for?

Just wondering.

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

So far as I can tell (and IANAL) this is quasi-legal (or rather quasi-illegal) at best. You're agreeing to a contract and then circumventing the clauses relating to location. As someone else has pointed out there usually are clauses about "thou shalt not view from another geography" in these kinds of services and you're getting round them.

Having said that, that's a T&C not a law so it's a civil issue not a criminal one, unless our Copyright Act has something in it about circumventing DRM solutions and that's worded broadly enough to capture secure VPN tunneling to another country.

But I'm not a lawyer, just a television watcher, and I'd like to actually pay the producers of my content for their labours. It's just that it's so damned difficult.

It probably isnt legal because although you are paying for it, you aren't viewing it in the legal location you you paid for it in.
