Looks like a sale is on the table.
I wonder who will buy it? I can only assume that it won't be one of the big players, as the Commerce Commission (in NZ at least) would probably shoot it down in a hurry.
It does strike me as a store for teenagers / people who want to buy bottom end TV's and PC's.
The top end 'concept' stores looked nice when they opened up, but they still have last years TV's lining the shelves - which is making them look dated already. Pity, 'cos they leave a lot of other stores behind in other presentation areas.

I don't know if the commerce commission would shoot a big player down for bidding on it, as it is probably one of the most competitive areas in retail with lots of players. It is not as though it is a duopoly, or monopoly in that area of retail. I would doubt a big player would buy it either to then shut it down, like what happens in other areas. Would be good if apple purchased them, and they became proper apple stores.

I guess a NZ player who is looking to break into the Aussie market could be a go'er.
BUT - the market they're in is being skinned for profit margins, so they'd be wanting to get it for a song. Especially if they buy it with the loss making stores intact...

JB actually makes a lot of sense, especially from an expansion perspective. They both cover a lot of the same stuff, although JB goes harder after the software market than DSE, DSE have some large stores in areas where JB are absent and unable to find much at present (especially in the Christchurch market, although it'd be a brave person to take on the DSE riccarton store which falls apart at anything over a 4 pointer)

For sale: Third rate high street electronics store.

This once famous brand used to be occupy the space now occupied better by JayCar and sell parts to people who built stuff.

Now similar to JB Hi Fi, Noel Leeming, Bond and Bond and the electronics department of Harvey Norman. However, has a smaller range than all of them and doesn't sell white ware or DVD/Blu-Rays. Can almost compete on price for bottom end TVs and budget audio equipment if they are having a sale and the others are not, watch this space.

Also has a narrow range of PCs and accessories at very average prices along with a range of cellphones you can buy for half the price on the internet and have delivered.

Features house brand Konka TVs the quality of which staff describe as 'not quite there yet' [I asked on Saturday] and a great value range of branded AA batteries.

Currently the only local distributor of the Kindle (sorry, the last years model), oh you already bought the new one online? Well, may be next time, eh?

Price: What are you offering?

That about cover it?

To be honest who in their right mind would buy the turkey? Woolworths aren't selling because it is a raging success, are they?

That's not the truth. Their branded AA batteries are bad value. I bought a cheap digital camera for my daughter and the staff recommended "why not some spare batteries?". I thought "Why not?" and bought a couple.

They are so bad, the camera only took 20 pictures before borking. Not even using good batteries (three sets of a well known brand alkalines) after fixed it. I "reset" the camera by removing the batteries overnight. Next day the camera worked fine. I took to my local DSE and the person there said "hmmm, they shouldn't have recommended that, those batteries are not good enough for digital cameras and other electronic devices".

the store in Rotorua is great for browsing , they back on to the Cheescake Factory store and you always come out of the store feeling peckish , staff know nothing though

Agreed about the battery's. Needed a new battery for my computer - DSE was more expensive than Pak'n'Save by several dollars (I think even Mitre 10 was cheaper than DSE). There own brand batteries are OK for most uses - when on special, otherwise I buy at the supermarket. I have to admit I used to work for DSE,glad I left, enough said.

The Dick Smith Deals in their marketing that 'speculated' on their staffs ability to do 'deals' was a croc too.
I went in, found a cable I needed and asked for a better price.
They said 'the price is the price'.
I pointed out it was a DSE branded cable and that they'd be gouging at the price it was stickered...
They said that they could only do deals on parts if I bought a computer, a printer... then wanted a cheap cable. And if they did discount it, they'd "get in trouble with Auckland".

Now Auckland's a big city, and I'm sure it's often angry. But not over a cable... surely?
All that happened was that they missed the deal.
Oh well. Hopefully they can do a Dick Deal for a new buyer? If not, Sydney might get pissy?

I can remember when i used to be able to go into dick smith and ask where a variable resistor was and the chap behind the counter would say what size. Now as soon as you walk in there is a sales person trying to fob off some overpriced junk that i dont need.
