It looks like Woolworths has decided to sell Dick Smith:

"Woolworths ... will accelerate the restructure of its specialty consumer-electronics brand, Dick Smith, with a view to divesting the business in a staged and considered process," Woolworths said today, after wrapping up a three-month strategic review into the Dick Smith business.

"The future of the Dick Smith business ... could be realised through new ownership," the retail giant added.

I'm thinking that Pak'n'Save could have a ball with this company.

It's been hinted at in the papers or quite a while. I think it needs to go back to it's core roots again, as it is now largely just another toaster shop, without the toasters.

If I want consumer goods, I'll go to one of the other chains.

Bring back DSE with kits, components, wires and books... leave the consumer electronics to the others.

I believe that is owned by a NZ family owned company, so in a way it would be good if they did for the NZ economy, then the profits would stay in NZ. But I doubt it will be cheap to buy, and it may not be a sustainable business in it's current form. Since they changed their website to a new dumbed down version, missing the realtime search as you type, I haven't purchased anything from them.

Nothing, I am just a Waffle man myself :)

But seriously I also loved (not) one of the quotes from Woolworths Management in OZ

"Announcing the decision, Woolworths management said affected staff would be moved to other jobs within the group."

So for NZ employees, does this mean that if your store closes, you will end up down the road at the nearest countdown filling shelves.....

Unsolicited offers already rolling in...
Looks like a sale is on the table.
I wonder who will buy it? I can only assume that it won't be one of the big players, as the Commerce Commission (in NZ at least) would probably shoot it down in a hurry.
It does strike me as a store for teenagers / people who want to buy bottom end TV's and PC's.
The top end 'concept' stores looked nice when they opened up, but they still have last years TV's lining the shelves - which is making them look dated already. Pity, 'cos they leave a lot of other stores behind in other presentation areas.
