vexxxboy:

strange weather in Rotorua , the wind has died away and we have light rain. Bit like a disaster movie all calm just before the proverbial hits the fan

That's the Northland/Auckland area creating a vaccuum pulling in air from around the storm front, so you get the proverbial calm before the storm. Deceptively calm here too, no rain since earlier today and just a bit blustery.

neb: It's got lot more grim, looking at Vector's map it looks like around 50% of their coverage area north of about Albany has no power.

A note for people using Vector's outage map to check on whether friends&family have power, it doesn't update dynamically so you need to manually refresh to see changes.

If anyone from Vector's web devs is reading this, it'd be nice to have push-based updates rather than manual reloads, and a time-based display of what's been fixed similar to what many other sites use, full colour = current outage, light shade = fixed in the last 60 minutes, much lighter shade = fixed in the last 3 hours or something similar.

Its quite bizarre here in Titirangi... You can see the skys are angry and occasional stronger gusts of wind but its like we're just waiting for something to happen that you know is coming but isn't manifesting itself yet...

I also live in Titirangi, and right now it could be any normal Sunday evening. Well aware the fury is still to come but it feels eerily quiet out here in the west. Which is not a bad thing after what we copped a couple of weeks back.

It's very, very windy at the end of the Whangaparaoa Peninsula in Auckland, not sure how well I'll sleep!

Absolutely horrible up here in Whangarei. Friends have lost large trees, power cuts all over the show. Socks and trackpants on.

Very unimpressed with this summer. A strongly worded letter to whoever is in charge will be forthcoming.

heavenlywild: Harbour Bridge closed as at 3.30pm

I believe it's since opened again.

Dont think so.

Transit NZ cameras all show empty roads and their notifications record all on ramps closed (they just seem to have removed the specific annoucement of the harbour bridge being closed, but with no on ramps open there is no traffic).

Oh I heard that info from a friend, not sure where he got it from.

Partner will probably have to take SH16 to get to the CBD tomorrow, sigh.

I thought emergency management had advised people to work from home?

My partner's role means she can't, otherwise she would (corrected my post). I will be WFH, though - schools are closed for the next 2 days as well. Yay for yet another unplanned school holiday 😕
