Radio NZ Mediawatch takes a look at all the recent proposed newsroom closures/reductions.
https://archive.ph/VmUYV >> two groups of staff at TV3 have put together a proposal to try and save the newsroom. Early indications are these may actually come to something. More to be revealed on this (and TVNZ's proposed cuts) this week.

You have to wonder whether these journos are just in it to save their jobs and pay cheques vs having a real interest in bipartisan journalism.

What sort of question is that? Of course they're in it to save their jobs. They can't eat air. But that doesn't preclude them from also having an interest in good journalism.

"Reality Check" "Radio" (lol)
Speaking of which - they went off air today: https://archive.ph/VEETm
Guess they aren't quite as popular as they think they are.

If it was that easy to start a radio station everyone would be doing it. It's a difficult market I suspect to get much money from anyone.
They have their devoted fans for sure - but I suspect that hardly any of them would be interested in paying to hear views that align with theirs.
It's not that hard to setup a station, just the people they have doing their shows won't do it for free or the minimum wage, I can tell you - as someone with media experience myself I can tell you that the likes of Peter Williams will be demanding a pretty penny to do what he does there.
This thread does TVNZ as well ?
If TVNZ is state owned why doesn't the state tell them to provide a proper news service ?

Because that is not how state owned enterprises work. They have a board for decisions and are expected to return money to their owner.
If they want a public broadcaster then that is something else. TVNZ is just an entertainment company that happens to have the govt as their owner. Look for Maori TV if you want to see something closer to a public broadcaster and IMO that is where the money should go to get them up to speed as a proper news source etc.

Lol that they say return to airwaves when they have never been there. Its just an online streaming babblefest which there are 100s of people doing all over the place.
Exactly. At least with The Platform, Plunket (as far as I know) doesn't need to rely on listener donations. Obviously this "Reality" crowd - who I thought were backed by Voices for Freedom? are mostly reliant on listener donations and when they stop, they stop. But I find this all highly amusing to watch, they're so full of themselves they think "so many Kiwis listen to us"...but they obviously don't, and most aren't interested in paying for the privilege.

Except its not a radio station. Those are regulated, have to have complaints processes, meet license conditions that they pay a crapload for.
Reality check is nothing more than a few bro's with a podcasting setup. That is what anyone can start up with almost no budget except those guys are now crying for money hoping to fleece it out of the boomers that lap that crap up.

yip, is not even Radio,
Its just a live streamed podcast, and I'm not sure they have much differentiation in a very crowed market of on line "Cookers"
Re the TVNZ cuts, Melissa Lee again shows why she shouldn't even be in the Broadcasting Minister job with yet another tone-deaf response to a question:
I wonder what this "solution" of hers is going to entail - having everyone watching "Sky and other medias"? Spare me 🙄

TVNZ should have been privatised back in the 90s when the commercial arm of RNZ was sold off. State ownership of a commercial broadcaster is pointless.
I would think that RNZ would be in a good position provide a daily public service televised news bulletin. I think Checkpoint still has some limited video content, so it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to scale that up using some of the extra funding that the previous government committed to RNZ.
