Slow Horses - Apple TV original 6/10.

Follows a team of British intelligence agents who serve as a dumping ground department of MI5 due to their career-ending mistakes. Led by their brilliant but irascible leader, the notorious Jackson Lamb.

I had/have high hopes for this, but, Slow Horses is a slow burn. There is A LOT (too much IMO) of personal back ground to their career-ending mistakes. Garry Oldman plays a very brusque, chain smoking, heavy spirit drinker sloth but with a very languid instinctive sharp mind who has been tossed on the rubbish heap heading up this dumping ground department.

Watched first two episodes of four released so far (12 episodes over two seasons) and I hope it picks up. John Le Carre it isn't, but there is a pot boiling of intrigue and plot twists and with no doubt more to come.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

I'm persevering with Halo (TVNZ OD), but there's more "drama" than action and it's getting a bit tiresome.

Also - when did Mater Chief start wandering about without his helmet off? The whole thing about Halo is that he looks like a Spartan...

Yea Halo is turning out as expected. Very little to do with original timeline or events, which might be fine since they’re doing a semi-alternate timeline, but also with drastic changes to character personality/development.

Master chief doesn’t really act like the face of humanity supersoldier MC, a lot of ‘drama’ around the whole UNSC/colonists/Covenant ‘war’ when there shouldn’t be (it’s very one-sided, covenant gave no quarter to humans). It really feels like they (the publishing company) wanted their own version of The Expanse/GoT by slapping a Halo theme on it.

Just too many irregularities for previous Halo fans, and too much wrong with pacing and delivery for newcomers. If it didn’t have the Halo name it’d be an average run of the mill sci-fi series.

There just wasn't enough in Halo ep 1 for me, and with everyone's opinions here, and the limited time I have for watching content, I'll probably skip it for now.

Watched Slow Horses S01E01 and as someone else said, it looks like it could be a slow burn. I'll give it the 3 episodes and if I am not hooked, will move on.

Reading about the Russian soldiers digging trenches around the Chernobyl powers ration lead me to rewatching Chernobyl series on Sky Go.

Definitely worth a repeat viewing.

Also interesting MIT lecture on accident

I only knew a bit about this guy - never saw any of his stuff on TV here, ever - but wow, what a monster. I'm amazed he got away with it as long as he did.

A former manager of mine worked for the BBC and said there were always rumours flying around about the guy, but nothing that could be proven (at the time). I don't think he'd have such an easy time today.

Totally; and also a series that I thought got better (and more involving) as it progressed. Can't wait for season two, though by then our free year of Apple TV+ will have ended - will definitely re-subscribe to watch this. (It's surprised me how much new content has been released on the platform this year - while still small compared to others, it's grown a lot in the last few months.)

Thanks, I'll have a hunt for that over the long weekend.

Does anyone over 40 ever recall seeing any of his shows (or him hosting Top of the Pops) here at all, ever? I definitely don't.

Top Boy - Netflix

Just echoing the other previous comments. The last/4th/2nd series isn't a patch on the previous ones. I absolutely loved Summer House and the first Netflix series was ok, but as with the US versions of shows there is just too much happening now which just wouldn't happen or things are happening far too easily and quickly.

It doesn't help when my solicitor wife LOL's shouting "Oh please, they can't do that !"

Julia 2022 - Docuseries based on Julia Child.

The outstanding first episode, don't recall the last time I enjoyed a pilot more.

What a character she was. David Hyde is an excellent match for his role too.

I'd consider it pretty good even if you aren't a foodie. Very accessible.

10/10

Absolutely agree 100%

I remember my farther getting excited over watching Graham Kerr and then Hudson and Hall but Julia Child was just on another and even higher mountain

I didn't move to NZ until late 90's, but I spent the earliest years of my childhood in the UK during the early and late 1980's and remember the 'Jim'll Fix It' persona, & wasn't aware of the Top of the Pops until the 90's.

'Jim'll Fix it' and Jimmy Savile were definitely saturated throughout the UK consciousness. My brother had a 'jim'll fix it' 'soap on a rope' in the shape of the 'jim'll fix it medals'.

I always wondered why this old guy dressed in shiny tracksuits pretending to be young, but I wasn't old enough to spend any time thinking about it, taking everything at face value.

Killing Eve Season 4 (series finale) on TVNZ on Demand

Really enjoyed the first season but 2nd and 3rd seasons were so-so.  I was hoping for a strong finale but what a load of shite it was. I haven't seen a series start off as strong as KE and fall off a cliff since Heroes.

I don't know what the writers were thinking and I feel sorry for cast who are all excellent. I also found it hard to work out what they were saying a lot of the time with the background music overpowering the dialogue ala Christopher Nolan style.

2/10 (and only because episode 5 (flashback) was the best of the lot).
