Watched Hidden Figures last night. What a good story of women's rights, racial rights/tension, space and science. 8/10 for the whole setup.

Also saw A United Kingdom last week. Interesting story but not sure about the whole movie. Give it a 7/10.

Saw La La Land with my wife. What a letdown. Two Leads in a musical with little to no singing talent. Possibly intended for an older audience who has memory of the "great musicals" of yester year, but as someone who didn't watch that stuff, I just wasn't that into it. My wife hated it. There were some interesting bits, but for me, no spark between them. 6/10

Assassin's Creed. Not sure what to say, interested to see it because I've played all the games. Didn't expect much, didn't get much. Some good fights, weak plot. 6/10.

Rogue One

Finally saw it on Tuesday. I didn't get to see the last SW flick on the big screen (the force awakens) so I made an effort to see this one.

Over all, I enjoyed it a lot. There were a few things that let it down for me. Such as a lot of minor characters with confusing names. Without looking up a list of characters, I'd be hard pressed to remember any of their names.

Also, it had two overly-used cliche movie scenes where some semi-important character is shot and hangs on long enough to give a quick goodbye speech before they die. That grates me.

Very good visual effects. Especially bringing Grand Moff Tarkin back to life. You could tell it wasn't quite real, but it was very close to being him from 40 years ago.

Pork Pie

Saw it tonite with the GF. It was enjoyable. Thoroughly updated for 2017. It's all Facebooked and youtubed and smartphoned.

The cast were pretty good. Worth a look if you liked the original.

We saw it as part of a special preview we had to sign an NDA about, but I agree, it was pretty awesome.

Very Kiwi! Like the Wilder People movie.

The majority of the reviews I have read say it's an okay romp, but falls short of the magic of the original.

One of my favourite movie scenes - an overhead shot of the little decimated yellow mini being pursued on the long straights down South, a helmeted Tony Barry standing through the roof: "I'm taking this car to Invercargill, like I said Blondini, nothing half-a*ssed"

So, I'll skip the remake. I don't want to mess with one of my all time favourite movies.

Given the current political situation in the US I thought I would watch with my son the movie Absolute Power

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118548/

I actually had it on Blu-Ray shrink-wrapped, one of those bulk deals I got from Amazon UK.

Despite being a 1997 movie it holds up quite well and of course the topic is quite relevant :-)

He enjoyed it despite the low body count!

Saw arrival.  Wasn't sure what to expect.  Came out with the floaty, where is this going and what?! type vibe from Gravity and Interstellar.

One of those artsy types really.  Posed some interesting questions, but ultimately a bit hairy fairy for me.

Saw Split on the weekend. As you may know by now it's an M Night Shyamalan film. I've enjoyed a few of his films, but usually his need to add a huge plot twist that (a) you can see coming in the first 15 minutes of the film, or (b) just doesn't work, meant I went in with low expectations. And I enjoyed it.

It wasn't a great film (good, but not great) but James McAvoy is excellent in it. WIthout giving anything away (as it's in all the ad.s) he plays a character with multiple personalities, and does it very well. From accents to facial expressions to body language (and, to a lesser extent, wardrobe) make the personalites and their motivations quite distinct. It would be easy to be really over the top with each personality, but McAvoy only does this when it's relevant to that character or situation. There are some clues along the way that make sense at the end, and a tie in to an earlier MNS film in the last few seconds.

8/10 - 5 of those for McAvoy alone.

^I hear he's finished a draft of a sequel to Unbreakable.  I wonder if that's what you're referring to as the linkage in the last few seconds.  I haven't seen it yet so just speculating :)

Who'd have thought? I actually never watched Mission: Impossible III. Watched on Netflix last night. A 6/10 at most.

The Scoutts Guide to the Zombie Apocolypse on Amazon Video.

Wasnt expecting much but ended up being pretty entertained, some good laughs, gruesome Zombie deaths, it has nearly all the Zombie movie cliche weapons du jour.

Certainly wouldn't pay to watch it but as part of a streaming sub, there are worse options.
