@quickymart check out this Premium article on the NZ Herald
https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=12228176
Then look at this Article on the New York times

They even used the same photo
Yikes. Mind you, I would guess on the New Zealand articles they would probably have a monopoly, ie, you can't read those anywhere else.
I'll miss Steve Branuias's articles, I thought his were quite funny to read.
Anyone taking bets on how long it will last?

I guess it depends on how much their online advertising is effected, and website visitor numbers, versus the income they get from subscriptions. Some websites that have gone behind paywalls have become successful, and retained the paywall. It largely comes down to quality of content, and how much people value that content.

But the Herald article references the NYT, so they copied it, with permission and acknowledged that? Seems ok to me

Yep, sorry, that's what I meant. Copied was the wrong word. In today's speak it aligns often with illicit

Personally I think there's no going back.
If this fails commercially then NZME will eventually be facing a corporate takeover, or perhaps a breakup of their online and radio operations. They may well have been right when they tried to convince the Commerce Commission that their only hope for survival was to merge with Fairfax (or 'Stuff' or whatever it's called now).
I agree there's no going back but I don't think the Herald can pull this off. They just don't have the gravitas of a Washington Post or New York Times. Their so-called 'paywall' is also a bad joke. Any eight year-old can get around it. They will be broken up and sold off to more innovative on-line competitors.
Plesse igmore amd axxept applogies in adbance fir anu typos
They're playing catch up....... but that Model T Ford ain't catching the Bugatti anytime soon.
Unfortunately so many large NZ companies etc leave things way too late to invest in. And it costs them more than just the implementation cost.

The model before they put up the paywall wasn't working (stagnant advertising revenue) so they don't have much to lose
Anyone here get the email "Todays NZ Herald News Briefing" from the New Zealand Herald yesterday morning, thanking them for signing up to New Zealand Herald Premium, (which I hadn't, but I had registered as a Herald user many moons ago) complete with Premium content links that worked. My immediate reaction was I had been given a trial subscription.
This email was followed up with a "Sorry" email an hour and a half later saying the first email wasn't meant for me as it was only for those who had signed up for Premium.
They might have just got a subscriber if a trial Premium subscription showed Premium was worthwhile.

They've updated the paywall implementation which breaks most extensions or scripts - this is still really bad, albeit it takes 15 seconds instead of 10 seconds to do it unlike before.
