Not small by any measure, but the heavy heavy rain bucketing down in Auckland right now. GO you good thing!

I am not sure when the last time I saw/heard rain of this magnitude in Auckland. Can't talk on the phone it's so loud.

Niwa recorded the "second-wettest hour" in Auckland between 8am and 9am, with 76.8mm of rainfall.

There will be hundreds if not thousands affected by this

So it makes you smile that people's houses are flooding, their material possessions lost/destroyed?

To be fair, he may not have known that. I only just opened the news and saw what was happening: It's just fairly normal rain where I am.

Edit: It is now beginning to bucket down out there.

You don't have to read the news to know that a downpour like this is going to result in flash flooding.

No, but then I guess if you engaged your brain for a few seconds, you'd already know that.

The presence of rain in a region that has been dry as a bone for months, and the benefits of that, made me smile.

Where is a good place to get a past 24-hour rainfall total for Auckland (or other region)?

Miss 10 cleaned up in her netball prize giving. She got player of the year for her club team and won player of the year in the overall competition prize giving. She can battle for recognition at times so this was really nice.

It's such positive reinforcement when kids get recognised if they don't usually.

Weather Underground or PWS Weather, specifically the individual weather stations, you can have it as localised to your area as you want.

Geektastic:

MadEngineer: Wave a a camera at a bar code and out pops a can of coke. Amazing.

Wow - that is some barcode - or some camera. How does it produce drinks?  Replicator? Or did you mean wave a camera at the bar?

In case it's not obvious, it was from a coke machine.  Curiously the camera -> barcode function works better than paywave for some reason.  There's an app available for it but I just use the browser option as the iPhone camera app provides the link.  Once initially set up it doesn't even need signing in or tapping accept on something.

You're not on Atlantis anymore, Duncan Idaho.

She's quite gangly and  tall so isn't recognised as "athletic" but has great game awareness and very good hands. Especially on defence, she gets her hands on the ball a lot.

She didn't make the school team this year which was bizarre. They picked all the "sporty" girls, which turned out to be something of a disaster with a lot of infighting.

The school coach apologized to my wife on Friday. It's been a great year for her.
