Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. 8/10

Very much a light-hearted fun romp, albeit with a huge body-count. Some nice nods to the rest of the MCU; but DEFINITELY does not take itself at all seriously; although there is a significant emotional ending. High W.A.F. (she's not a huge SciFi fan, but did enjoy this one).

And don't forget to watch the entire credits for the 5 end-credit scenes...

^^Saw it this afternoon.  Very cool, hilarious and a great sequel for a change.  Could have done without one specific storyline (ravagers based stuff) but other than that it was excellent fun and well worth seeing on the big screen.  Lots of nice use of 3d too.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe - Despite a promising start with an intriguing premise and 3 dimensional characters, at about the halfway point turned into a standard cliched horror - 5.5/10

A Street cat Named Bob - Feel good, and based on a true story. Was a little too run of the mill with no real surpirses more my taste - 6/10

A Monster Calls - Don't be put off by the name, it is not a straight to video horror movie. I'd describe it as a fantasy drama. Was excellent, and one of the few movies in recent memory to give me a genuine case of the feels - 9/10

The Girl with All the Gifts - Kind of a mashup of 28 Days Later and the PlayStation game The Last of Us. Pretty good. 7.5/10

Ditto.  Nothing to add.  A fun film to watch, just as much fun as the first film.  Kurt Russell is great.

Alien: Covenant - lined up for this evening at Reading.

Huge fan of Alien 1 & 2 ...

3 & 4 were ok ...

Prometheus was a major let down ...

So based on above trend I don't have high hopes - but have fingers secretly crossed Ridley's gonna pull a blinder out of the bag!

Have kept away from all reviews, will report back tomorrow (with a short spoiler-free review).

Ok, here goes ...

Exceptional first 5 minutes  (wow, it was good, I actually hoped it would last the full 120 minutes).

Thereafter, devolves into standard 'crew die one by one' Alien genre piece ... check

New alien variants, even faster growing than ever ... check

CGI overkill, no subtlety ... check

New Ripley ... check

Hey, why not blow bad alien out of the ship's air lock ... check

All of that said, on the positive ... a better film than Prometheus, entertaining, but a worn-out-of-ideas, paint by numbers, genre piece nonetheless.

6/10

BUT ... a movie first: someone kissing them self. Not seen that before, well done Ridley.

I have to agree but I liked Prometheus better by a small margin. Otherwise just another let down. It just never really captured my attention. I'm so sick of CGI being substituted for a decent story. I have a mate who's always asking "What's good on at the movies?" to which my standard reply is "As usual these days - absolutely nothing".

Since I was so disappointed by Alien, I thought I would recommend something else

Get Out

Genuinely creepy black comedy and one of the best films I have seen this year. I left the cinema fizzing. Highly recommended.

just a warning , that link gives away the whole plot of the film so if you dont want the film ruined dont click it.

Common sense is not as common as you think.
