Crap like this on the herald article really annoys me.

Gardiner said Spada had been calling for Government regulation of international streamers for some time. “These large multinationals need to contribute to the local production industry in some way, to alleviate the market distortion they have created. This regulation is now urgent. The impact of the streamers, along with Facebook, Google and YouTube, on advertising revenue has been devastating, and has now hit a crisis point.”

Its as mad as that import protection racket crap that was done away with in the 80s. They have a better product so deserve the custom.

Its a similar arguement that bricks and mortar stores use to justify why they think its unfair having to compete with imported products.

Its tough, you want local programming which is why we have NZ On Air etc because those programs are typically not commercially viable without Gov funding and those who take substantial funding are expected to produce additional NZ themed programming but they cant compete with a huge multinational that can dump a huge amount of foreign tv/movies that they license or own and produce no NZ content.

Whats the solution?

It's also interesting now in terms of average TV hours Youtube has overtaken Netflix in several countries

I haven't watched them since John Key's mate got rid of John Campbell.

This does underscore once again that market 'farces' aren't up to doing the important jobs NZ needs done.

I note TVNZ is also gutting their current affairs programming - which was actually profitable. Cost savings, they say. I don't believe a word of it.

To be honest NZME's talk station isn't much better. Mediawatch quite often calls them out on misinformation.

The worst example was in the lead up to Cyclone Gabrielle when their on-air hosts were playing down the seriousness of the situation. This coming from a radio station that apparently is an official Civil Defence emergency broadcaster.

I love listening to Mediawatch, it's the only time I get to find out what rubbish the likes of Hosking and co are spouting and reinforces my decision to not listen to talkback radio.

The Guardian: Blow to New Zealand media as two main news outlets announce programme closures and job cuts

New Zealand’s news media has been dealt a major blow after two of its primary news outlets announced programme closures and hundreds of job losses between them on the same day, leaving the country with just one state-owned news television service and many senior journalists out of work.

On Wednesday morning, Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed it would close all its Newshub news operations, including the news website, the morning television show and the 6pm television bulletin, resulting in roughly 300 job losses.

By the afternoon TVNZ – the state-owned television broadcaster – had confirmed it would axe its long-running current affairs programme Sunday, consumer affairs programme Fair Go, and stop its midday and late-night bulletins, resulting in the loss of another 68 media roles.
...
Newshub’s closure means the country is left with just one English television news service, the now pared back state-owned TVNZ.

Oh please don't. We don't need the Aussies pushing their agenda here.

Yet again, Melissa Lee proves how hopelessly inept she is as Minister of Broadcasting 🙄

Yea Melissa Lee being the Minister of Broadcasting should be more responsible and should have contributed to this mess of a situation and fixed it.
She's the minister, so she has the power to use tax payer money to fund Newshub jobs and bail them out. Maybe she could offer them few millions and maybe they'll go easy on this govt!

Instead, she is just trying to live up to National's motto - literally let the free market play it out and govt to have least interference.

There's no way the taxpayers should bail out these news organizations. If they can't survive so be it.

Why shouldn't the taxpayer bail out a taxpayer owned company? News and current affairs are a public service and so it is not unreasonable to me that the taxpayer contributes.

Time for a move to the politics thread?

NZME has done it profitably. Others should be able to too.
