The technical police squadron, with their mobile test vehicle, made the tough guys with the sound-tuned Harleys look like stupid schoolboys when there were traffic controls yesterday, after which some were allowed to walk home after being put out of action.

Those who are so rude as to make technically completely superfluous, ego-individualistic noise in the street canyons can expect no mercy. The guys will surely still have the sense and insight at some point, but you can't wait that long and the noise is now.

(Serious question)
Are there actual laws about this?! Often on a Friday I can hear a car coming from 100m away and wished there was some way of complaining.

Don't whole businesses in NZ rely on replacing perfectly working exhaust systems with noisy performance ones?

Seems every Subaru who passes me on street has a noisy aftermarket exhaust.

As said I‘m in Germany and we have two applicable regulations for this. One is the excessive noise level in dB and the second is that any technical modification need an approved entry into the registration papers. All after market parts in use need an approval as well. If the are modifications without approval, the vehicle is immediately out of action and it can only be back when the original state has been restored. There might be something similar in NZ. I think it‘s more a question of law enforcement. It had become so worse with those - so called ‚posers‘, that we have special police investigation teams equipped with educated engineers and they are quite successful. The fines are really high.

Best I ever have seen was a 2 policemen bicycle team, which got a tuned Ferrari out of service. It started with a fine of just 20€ but the holder was complaining about and it ended with an arrest of him and confiscation of the car because during the discussion and radio contact with the police station, they found much more on the list other than noise.

There are serious laws about this. No, they are very rarely enforced.

I have heard of some bike places that have 'WOF-friendly' pipes for bikes that they can swap on just for the WOF inspection.

Where you're not allowed to run a lawnmower or line trimmer on Sundays and public holidays. They have noise control laws with actual teeth there rather than dentures that fall out a lot.

If you like bees give them a Grewia Occidentalis 'Mauve Star', beautiful green bush that's full of purple star-shaped flowers that attracts bees like crazy. And for people worried about bees, they're so entranced by the flowers that they never bother anyone nearby.

No doubt backed by big lawnmowing contractor cartels to keep a captive customer base.

Communications. I'm really not entirely sure what that entails to be honest, but it seems transferable as a skill if looking long-term.

He was interested in other things, but his maths let him down. I'm busy trying to get him to get his stamina up for the daily runs that are the routine in basic training, as opposed to the weights that he seems more interested in.

If he's already motivated enough to do weights, he'll be fine with the "daily runs" - there will be be others there for whom their first piece of exercise for a very long time will be on day one.

If he can reach between level 7 and 8 on a standard beep test, he'll breeze through.

He's certainly fine with the weights - at his fitness test a month or so back, the Sergeant told him to stop the pushups when he got to 120...

I'm really hoping that's the case regarding the runs, but his mate from high school, who is half way basic right now, has mentioned 10+ km runs most mornings - I figured that if the whole thing is going to be both physically and mentally taxing, he might as well get on top of the physical part now so that he doesn't have to worry about at least that part as much.

Thanks for the recommendation! Those wild bees have not much in common with honey bee populations since they don‘t produce honey and have no state with a bee queen. They have a sting but it is very underdeveloped and weak since they don‘t have to defend anything with it. They are not interested in sweets on the breakfast table - just pollen. If you put your head into their flight path to take a photo, they just circumvent you without any attack. The sound is awesome and I like them very much since they are cute and friendly. They only have a lifespan of 10-14 weeks as bees before they die leaving the next generation in their tiny homes in a size of a bird’s house on the wall for the next spring. You don’t have much effort since they take care by themself. If you scale up their amount of blossom visits, they are much more effective than honey bees and have an operational range of 700 meters.

@Gurezaemon

Haha in line with the thread title, reading that made me smile - although I'd respectfully suggest that the high school friend may be ahhh "embellishing" his experience somewhat...

While 10km may be a short warm-up for a seasoned runner, two things immediately spring to mind reading that:

- To get someone conditioned from no running to multiple 10km trots a week takes a long time. Most youngster's bodies won't be used to that sort of impact, which then results in injuries. Injuries make other aspects of training difficult to achieve - so while we need sailors to be fit, there's a balance to be struck.
- There also simply isn't enough time in a recruits' day to cram in multiple 10km runs a week!

Don't get me wrong, we make the recruits do a lot of physical exercise, and running is certainly a part of that - but not to the extent suggested.

Heheheh. I slightly thought that the friend may be talking it up a bit to be honest. From all I hear though, having good stamina is more important than raw strength, so he needs to work on that.

The NZDF's own fitness challenges here (beginner) and here (advanced) don't come anywhere near the 10 km distance I mentioned above.
