Realistically this will take a while to bed in and it depends much on how other services respond. In general I feel it is a very good service but it will take them time to find out what is valued. To some extent they will follow the WP model using the tech and it's hard to know if capable of responding to the local market needs appropriately.

Unlike the website redesign I have yet to read anywhere about any "overwhelmingly positive response" to the paywall being implemented.

Is the Arc team seriously boasting about the "state of the art" Herald paywall?

“It was a huge leap of faith for us to launch a subscription service on a news website in New Zealand. Our collaboration with Arc ensured we launched this new business with a world-class platform that would deliver the best experience for readers who want to subscribe to our journalism,” said Tracey Bond, Senior Product Manager for New Zealand Media and Entertainment. “We are thrilled with the reception from customers and we’re excited to roll out other features on the road map as they become available.”

Arc Subscriptions features include:

  • Paywall: An easy-to-use module that allows marketers and business managers to control and iterate on content access, supporting a wide range of approaches, including a hard paywall that requires registration or a subscription to a metered paywall that allows readers to consume a specific number of stories before they are asked to sign in.

Working well apparently:

same article: NZME’s Premium subscription numbers have exceeded initial projections less than two weeks after launch.

What is your objection exactly?

People are either very honest or very dumb. My objection is to an extremely poor design being passed off as something even minimally secure. Someone is being led by the nose here.

Well, ten thousand of you paid for the NZ Herald then.

More than 10,000 people have already signed up for New Zealand Herald digital subscriptions - smashing the company's annual target in less than six weeks.

In what has been described as the boldest media move on the New Zealand media landscape, nzherald.co.nz introduced its Premium paywall on April 30 - launching a new business revenue model by charging for its best and exclusive journalism.

10 000 out of how many readers in total though? 100 000? 500 000? 1 000 000?

Regardless of the share if they hold the numbers it's $1.3 million of new revenue over 12 months.

I can get Geekzone for free but I still pay for a subscription knowing it's helping make the site more sustainable. Same applies to NZ Herald, The Guardian, et al.

Maybe.. but I, as a non subscriber, no longer go to their website, so don't see the adverts, so their advertising revenue will drop.. as it is paid by views.. (assuming that I am not the only one)

If you say so. They'd have to pay me to subscribe to it.

I could be wrong, but just a quick scan of their homepage this morning it looks like almost 50% of the content is premium - or am I overcharging here?
