Abandoned ship at the office for fear of not being able to make it back home or to pick up my son this evening.

Very blustery at home. Now getting solid punching gales blowing through. Southerlies now, not a direction we get much wind from. But also not our must vulnerable direction so hopefully be OK.

I too was wondering about window taping.

For standard glass I think it makes sense. In the event of a break the tape gives a good chance of keeping large pieces together and less likely to enter the house at velocity. Might even buy you time to tape it more if it cracks.

For the other glass type that shatters into a million small bits for safety, I can't see it making a huge difference.

In both cases does it add any strength? Maybe just a little. I think strength is not the reason for taping.

Looking at the track of the storm on Windy, it'll change from a South Easterly to a South Westerly some time in the night - as the storm spins past/over Auckland.

That should be interesting for any weakened trees/fences/structures, suddenly being blasted from the other side!

Bracing ourselves for power cuts and outages, later today. Vector's site shows everyone north and slightly east of us is affected (or at least, large numbers of homes/businesses).

Eva888: Wooden storm shutters is something I would kill for living in the heights facing South but they aren’t a thing in NZ. There’s an idea for someone smart to jump on to. Even if it was a removable shutter that you could hang up and screw down each storm.

We had a window break one year and the glass shard shot almost 4 meters across the room and imbedded itself in the opposite wall into the wood. Still there today. Since then have always kept the curtains closed in storms and stay in a back room that we turned into a safe sitting room.

in Europe they use external "blinds". typically electrically operated. not just to keep stuff from hitting the glass (especially as its triple glazing) but also used for shade in summer.

Looks closer than that, but the windspeed isnt too high outside of the eye, which is a good thing

to check the rainfall per 3 hours, hold the cursor over where you want to check

Yeah, that report was many hours ago. I assume the rain is estimated as per hour, 4.5mm etc?

I don't possess special knowledge about this but I do believe that car glass is laminated to keep it from turning into shrapnel and I would think that taping regular glass might have a similar effect.

The 3HPA setting under Earth setting icon on the bottom right is 3 hour accumulation, so right now just off north Coromandel it shows about 22mm, so thats  22mm over 3 hours rate,  about 7mm per hour.

Popped out briefly to deal with something urgent and in Sandringham the wind has significantly picked up and rain fall is noticeably heavier.

Right now it's raining on and off with a bit of wind. The wind is strong but compared to last night it's 10% of the strength. This works for me!

Just like a winter's day in summer. Let's hope it stays that way.

Whole thing seems to have peaked here (Whangarei) - but the high tide here means that pretty much all of downtown has been advised to evacuate, as high tide is at around 2 PM today.

A 25-m tree next door has come crashing down. Looks like free firewood time!

The creek in my back garden that is normally a trickle 1m wide now looks like this:

Unless it starts to drift back to the west shortly it may just keep this track up and slip down the side of the east of the island.

Worth remembering the models had it bouncing off the Auckland/Coromandel region so that may be wishful thinking.

Thanks @FineWine who knew YT would have the answer. Saw some board and batten ones that seem easy to make. The hardware would be the biggest issue as the sea spray rusts everything.
Still dead calm here.

On further research as NZ/Aus don't use shutters like they do in the States & Europe, the biggest problem is the lack of choice for hinges/gudgeons, fancy or plain and recessed or jutting

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Typically car windscreens are laminated. If they are broken, the plastic in the lamination will keep the broken glass together as a mat. Other car windows are typically tempered glass which will shatter into very tiny pieces.
