Come on, he's allowed to express his opinion. An opinion shared by among others, Helen Clarke who described John Campbell as a "creep". I happen to agree with her too.

Guess what? So am I?

Beyond that I don't care what you or Helen Clarke think. Go tell it to the clouds.

But you’re not just expressing an opinion. You are attacking a fellow GZer, which is probably against the FUGs. Play the ball, not the man.

@Rikkitic Dingbatt is right here. You were not expressing an opinion only, you were clearly calling a fellow Geekzoner.

I think it's time people get down from their high places and use proper discourse.

Saying "You use cheap shots" is not discussing the issue.

Accepted and I apologise. @Networkn and I have some history here and I was disappointed at his comment, which I felt really was beneath him because I have experiened a much more positive side of him. I didn't express that very well.

Kyanar: I don't agree with these "bargaining codes" like Australia and Canada implemented, New Zealand was considering, and Sky News Australia's head flew over to pitch at Luxon. They give an unfair advantage to large, established news organisations, and make it harder for new entrants to get into the market even with a better product.

Not at all. It provides smaller outlets with an opportunity. In either case it is better some are paid for their efforts compared to no-one getting paid.

Hard disagree. It's basically legalised extortion (legally mandated extortion!), fails to recognise that the digital platforms never asked news publishers to use their offerings, fails to recognise that the news companies use those digital platforms because they see a net commercial benefit from them, and benefits no-one but the megacorps like News Corp, who have the legal might to go hard in their "negotiations" (air quotes because it's anything but a negotiation) while smaller outlets just get brushed aside by the legal might of the digital platform behemoths.

As to "it's better some are paid for their efforts compared to no-one" - again, hard disagree, that's a false equivalence. There are a number of ways to properly remunerate real journalism and even some of that Hollywood entertainment cruft, and it's well worth having a discussion about that, but shakedowns of other industries are just an appalling "solution".

Not to further inflame this, as I have no interest in that, but consider if at the mention of Mike Hosking still being on the radio, you'd have been as restrained as simply saying 'mores the pity' :)

Pretty sure you don't spend a lot of time exposed to Donald Trump, but at the sheer mention of his name, it generates a pretty heated response. People don't like who they don't like.

We can certainly agree that the laissez faire approach has not worked, anyway.

Without a doubt. The one thing America got right was the upholding of a free and independent press as a pillar of democracy. Then they elected Donald Trump, so, you know there's that. The preservation of a free press is of absolutely undeniable importance, and just "let the market sort it out" clearly isn't the answer. And I don't know what the answer is. But I do know what it isn't.

Kyanar: And I don't know what the answer is. But I do know what it isn't.

The answer seems to be working well in Australia. It's not clear to my why you object to something that is proven and demonstrated to work well just because it does not fulfill 100% of your criteria.

Because it doesn't work. It benefits no-one but Murdoch and Nine-Fairfax (or whatever they're calling themselves today).

It's not clear to me why you keep arguing for a system which doesn't work and is an egregiously abhorrent form of government intervention.

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/514334/newshub-staff-called-for-important-business-update-on-tuesday-reports

Newshub said reports has emerged that its owner may consider outsourcing production of its 6pm news bulletin for Three and ThreeNow.

If this is true (and I hope it is), at least it would be better than nothing.

Three News at 6pm is brought to you by BP. In today's top story, scientists report that drinking a litre of crude oil every day may improve your lifespan by up to 175 years. In other news, transport minister Simeon Brown is tipped to announce that Auckland's Northwestern Motorway is to be expanded to 26 lanes.

Now that’s the kind of news I can approve of 😁
