actually you can , Sky screens a new episode at the same time as HBO does

Viewing, listening and reading use different parts of the brain. I am a reader. That is how I take in information. For many things, the printed word is better at conveying information, even if the video and audio alternatives are well-made (they almost never are and having to endure the sniffles and whines and ramblings of the illiterati are excruciatingly painful to anyone with an education).

Sometimes it can be interesting and worthwhile to watch or listen to an interview. Sometimes it can be useful to see how something is done. But most of the time there is no excuse for this kind of laziness. It is a new type of illiteracy, derived from a texting generation that is gradually sliding back to living in caves and walking on all fours as articulated thought is reduced to four-letter abbreviated grunts.

I bet people said the same thing when the printing press started to replace stories told by elders around a village fire.

I agree with Rikkitic here. I want to read something. I don't always have headphones, or not always in a place where I can play a video. Or on a mobile connection. Washington Post is doing this: half of the times I click through the RSS Feed it's a headline with a video. Just give me the story, I can read it.

It's also so slow. You can scan a wall of tetx and get to the bit that's relevant to you. Harder to do that with video - especially the narration.

The worst I have seen is the use of a ~60 second video for some guy to hold up and list the items that come in the box with a car stereo. A list would have taken <5secs to read. Pictures could have been added if required.

I've noticed people in the US tend to make long how-to or product review videos due to a lack of editing and far to much verbal padding.

It is still prerecorded. You are not watching the show with them doing the scenes at the exact same time you are watching them.

People who wait until they're at the till before looking a the menu to decide what they're going to have - even when having stood in the queue for 5+ minutes!

Same goes for getting the on the bus - people who wait until they're standing in front of the bus driver before searching for their wallet / purse or for their bus pass.

Use of the word 'super' instead of 'very'.

Sounds (somewhat) acceptable if you are 15. Sounds ridiculous if you are an adult or writing a newspaper article etc.

Yeah, because simple questions are the only thing anyone ever has to answer in jobs like law, engineering etc.....

I'm not going to do this. I'm going to take my business elsewhere.

Fortunately this seems to be a dying trend

Someone may have mentioned this before, it's hard to tell after 240 pages, but having just witnessed this:

Idiots in the narrowed bus only parts of Willis St and Lambton Quay (in this case) who decide to just dash across the street in front of a bus, despite all of the publicity about past injuries to people and the look left/right arrows painted on the kerb. What is it with you, can't wait 20 seconds for the bus to pass?

We have this great invention for getting more immediate answers, called...the telephone. You enter someone else's number and they answer and you can speak to them and ask them right there and then...

I had a boss once who only ever wrote file notes to his subordinates in pencil so that if the brown stuff hit the fan, his direction could miraculously disappear if it would show him in a bad light...!
