… "maybe this is an idea we should consider" …

Ancient Apocalypse

1/10 facts

8/10 cinematography

I just watched it to see what Hancock is like given that I keep running into people promoting his work. In the series his demeanour is calm and considered which helps to back up his claims as being rational. But his two main claims, repeated again and again, don’t have direct evidence but chains of surmise (if this then why not that) much like Erich von Daniken’s theories of alien civilisations from space.

  1. There was an advanced civilisation that did all the prehistoric structures we don’t know the origins of.
  2. Archaeologists and similar experts ignore/misinterpret/hide the evidence for this civilisation.

The North Water - very well made and well acted, but also quite horrible and depressing. Not for everyone, but I thought it was good.

From the trailer:

"Well, I'm Graham Hancock,  I don't claim to be an archaeologist or a scientist...."

How about we stop there then

Ep. 5 of Citadel. It's heating up, but it really needded to be all dropped at once.

One 40 min episode a week isn't good enough on a streaming platform.

The amount of money they spent on it , 2-3 hundred million, they need to spread it out and get as much bang for buck as they can

After resting Netflix for a while came back to find a couple of limited series that we liked.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story (Netflix) if you were a fan of the original Bridgerton, I would highly recommend this limited series. Links in really well with the original and explains a lot of the background.  9/10

Fubar (Netflix) Arnie and Monica Barbaro (Top Gun Mavrick) - won't win any awards but entertaining enough for some lighthearted comedy/action.  6/10

Watching From on Amazon Prime.

It's interesting, quite.. Lost ish. Kinda brutal. As is par for the course, it keeps getting more convoluted and involved and less believable. Not sure how much more of that I can handle, but it still has my attention. S1 was a 7.5. Season 2, 6.5 so far.

Succession

Season 4, Ep 9: Church and State

The writing and acting here is first class, or as one reviewer put it, "Church and State is a television masterpiece".

Been watching FUBAR (Netflix) - 4 eps in and it's quite entertaining (in a turn your brain of and just enjoy it, way). Arnie is Arnie and his co-stars ham it up for the lols and the action sequences are well put together.
Typical CIA action comedy stuff.

Also started watching the latest season of The Great on Neon. It's basically picked up where it left off last season. Alsmost feels like it was filmed all in one long hit and they've split it into seasons for some reason or other.
I'm enjoying it. If you like swearing, vulgarity, sexual innuendo, violence and weirdness, all wrapped up into a 17th (or is it 18th) Century period drama, then this is for you.
The idea of "The Bullet or the Bear" is quite frankly horrifying.

Citadel (the whole thing) - 8/10 (Prime Video)

I finished this off last night, after being away and finding that the final episodes had dropped while I was away. I agree with Handsomedan, that it would have been better if they had dropped the whole thing at once, but I understand why Prime like to dole out the episodes one at a time.

Overall, I think it was good.  but I found the overuse of the inverted camera trope was a bit much.  It's like a first year film studies student who discovered how camera tricks like the Dutch Angle* can infer things like deception and disorientation, and who is stuffing it into every scene.

My only other quibble is that the jumping back and forth with flashbacks and locations was jarring.  It felt a little like they filmed it in chronological order and then sent it to the editing suite where a madman with a pair of scissors chopped it all to hell.  All it served to do was disorient, without adding anything in terms of plot or character development.  The twists along the way were pretty predictable (for me), but it seemed as if they were using the flashbacks to try and trick the viewer into not noticing.  It didn't work.

They've indicated more to come - not a sequel as such, but an expansion of the Citadel "spyverse" which could be an interesting development.  Supposed to be coming out in 2024 though. I would have thought it better to build on interest and release it later in 2023.

* Google Dutch Angle.  Go on, just do it.  It's fun!

It started to outstay it's welcome by the end of the season, 8 hours was just too much.

If it was anyone other than Arnie it would be a hard pass, but I just can't help but love the guy. Very reminiscent of "True Lies", but sadly nowhere near as good.

To Catch A Killer - DVD - 8/10

The dramatization of how serial killer John Wayne Gacy was caught. Brian Dennehy stars and is really convincing as Gacy. Chilling.

Chernobyl - DVD - 8/10

This miniseries is a dramatization of the reactor disaster starring Jared Harris, Stellen Skarsgard and Emma Watson. Shows the incredible bravery of some ordinary Russians who prevented an even bigger disaster but paid with their lives and the incredible incompetence at all levels of the Russian state.

I think you mean Emily Watson. It sure ain't Harry Potter.
