Ready Player One.

Went to this with my 13 year old son and wasn't really sure what to expect.

I was pleasantly surprised and actually came away from the movie saying to anyone that has a gaming/movie/pop-culture interest that they should go and see it.

The little cameos by classic movie characters/game characters and constant pop-culture references were great - biut not distracting.

The CGI and live-action blending was good too. You know when you were watching something that was supposed to be "in the game" and it didn't distract at all - the CGI was clevely done.

Was it predictable? yes

Was it moderately formulaic? yes

Did I care? no

I'd see it again.

Ready Player One - 6.5/10 - It was well done, lots of pop culture references etc, but not like the book at all (and I'm only part way through the book), and felt it had two writing teams involved - one was all "PG" and the other "M". Would I watch it again ? Probably, but on the small screen.

Peter Rabbit - 8/10 - I was actually very surprised by this movie, had me laughing most of the way through it. Very well done and family friendly story that any kid can understand. My youngest loved the music in it.

Get Shorty (1995) 8/10

A really polished comedy/crime movie with John Travolta in a part made for him. Great script and some really amusing one liners plus a great supporting cast including Gene Hackman and Renee Russo.

Recommended.

A quiet Place - I was always on the edge of my seat with this. One of the best screenplays I have seen in a long time. A must watch in my opinion 9/10

Star Wars-The Last Jedi = 7/10 wish they hadn't stolen most of the plots from the first 3 movies (IV, V, VI)

Paddington 2 = 8/10 lovely movie, great actors enjoying themselves, Hugh Grant playing a baddie makes a big change.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Just saw XXY. It is an older film and I have seen it before but my stepson wanted to see it. I would give it an 8 out of 10. It is a very good film and the girl who plays the lead is exceptional.

Synopsis: Alien monsters have destroyed civilization. They hunt by sound - only the very, very quiet will survive.

Talk about tense! I've not been that on-edge during a film for a long time...

I enjoyed the storytelling approach - zero backstory; the film starts off at something like "day 93" (after the apocalypse). Where did they come from? What do they want? Who knows? Who cares? (It's not relevant anyway!) A nice refreshing change to movies that have to spoon-feed the entire plot to avoid confusing stupid audiences...

And plot-wise; wow, whoever wrote that story/screenplay is just MEAN. And just when I didn't think it could get worse for the poor family - it got worse...

Whilst there are a few stupidities, overall it was easy enough to ignore them, and just "enjoy" (hah!) the film for what it was.

Going to see A Quiet Place this weekend, sounds a lot like what I'm hoping.

Recently saw Ready Player One, was a bit disappointed. I thought the acting was sub par and the baddies were just lame. It gets a 6/10 for me.

Annihilation (2018, Netflix) - Based on Jeff VanderMeer’s best-selling Southern Reach Trilogy. I wouldn't pay to watch it on the movies, but it's not bad for a Netflix production.

it wasn't a Netflix film they just got the rights to screen it first everywhere except the USA ? , where it had a cinema release and it didnt do that well.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Schindler's List. Haven't watched this since its original release. Absolutely brilliant. Well deserved Best Picture Oscar. 9/10

Thor Ragnarok - second viewing and still thoroughly enjoyable.

Loses a little in the translation from large to small screen but a good old-fashioned superhero romp.

Particularly like the unhinged Jeff Goldblum and of course both Korg and Meek.

Nods to Kiwi/Aussie cultural icons in the spaceship names (Commodore and Torana) are pretty cool.
