Paul1977: Call me an out-of-touch fuddy-duddy if you like, but this ain't real Star Trek.

You're an old fuddy duddy.

Handsomedan:

I've been watching Million Dollar Island (yes...reality TV) on TV3 lately.

...the comment about winning has now changed to "could win a share of $1m". That's different to a chance of winning up to $1m, methinks. .

Yeah, I wonder if the winner from the final three will take away whatever they have on their wrist, so the more they are able to accrue before then, the better.

The promos are showing them doing challenges with bracelets on, so I think perhaps the same.

That's disappointing. I'm waiting until all episodes are available because I was assuming I'd like it so much I'd want to binge. Perhaps not?

There is a decent plot in there somewhere. It might just be a slow burn (I found that with Jack Ryan).

The bad guy and some of the stuff around that story line are certainly interesting enough, the rest is grating.

Handle9: I just finished season 1 of The Bear.
It’s about restaurant and family in Chicago. A great cast and incredibly inventive television. The episodes are mostly half hour which is nice.

Episode 7 is one of the most frenetic and well made episodes of TV I’ve ever seen. Truly an extraordinary technical episode to film an entire 18 minute episode in one take.

9/10

We finished season 2 the other day.

It’s one of the best seasons of TV I’ve seen in a long time. “Fishes” was incredible and disturbing while episodes like Honeydew and Forks were beautiful.

I think one of the things I like is there are no “baddies” or heroes, just a fascinating group of flawed and broken people.

have you seen Deadloch (Prime Video). An Australian crime series that is so Australian it is almost a send up. Very funny and a good story but be warned, if you are offended by swearing  especially the C word, then avoid . 8/10

I consider myself a reasonable heavy swearer, certainly no prude, and grew up both on a farm, and in a NZ Housing area, and I am pretty sure in my life, I have never heard or used the C word in total as many times as I think I heard in 1 season of deadloch. Madeleine Sami goes above and beyond in delivering the filthiest language I've heard in many years.

Having said that, it's a cracker of a series, I hope there is another series, and I hope it's just as good. I really enjoyed it.

I struggled to watch the first episode. Too much overacting and it felt like it was trying too hard for laughs. A bit more subtlety and it might have grabbed me.

When I saw how many more 1 hr episodes to go I left it.

Unknown series on Netflix is a fantastic series. The best of the bunch is “Unknown Cosmic Time Machine”

8/10 for the series. 10/10 for the afore mentioned.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

It gets better and better. I agree the first episode or two were really over the top, and in lots of ways it continues, but it was still excellent.

Credit where credit is due. The latest episode of Strange New Worlds “Under the Cloak of War” was actually pretty damn good.

It didn’t end at all how I expected it to, and presented ethical questions for which it didn’t spoon feed the viewer answers. It actually leaves you thinking at the end.

Dialogue overall was better than usual since the episode heavily features Dr M’Benga, whose accent and more thoughtful way of articulating himself doesn’t lend itself to modern day slang nearly as much. The result is that he’s one of the only characters that consistently feels “right” in that setting. I didn’t think much of his character in season 1, but in season 2 he has become the best character.

The use of modern day colloquialisms like “totally” and “I’m good” by other characters still felt wrong and out of place, but they were at a minimum this episode. And the lack of discipline on a military vessel still annoys. But, in this episode at least, those are minor complaints.

Plus, Clint Howard has a small cameo.

Overall a very pleasant surprise, and hands down the best episode of either season. It felt like Star Trek.

Star Trek The Original Series, season 1 episode 23 "Space Seed":

Kirk:  Mr Spock, you misunderstand us.  We can be against him and admire him all at the same time.

Spock:  Illogical

Kirk: Totally

Good Omens Season 2. Binge watched the whole thing last night.

Th story is not as good as the first one but they had nothing to base it on. Performances were amazing.

7.5/10

I haven’t checked the accuracy of your quote, but it sounds right so I’ll assume it’s correct.

In TOS Kirk was acknowledging the level of illogicalness (I know, not a word), ie totally (meaning completely) illogical. In SNW the Captain asked a crew member if they were attending a special dinner, to which the crew member replied “Totally” instead of “Yes” (or more appropriately “Yes sir”). Surely you can see the difference?

If they want to use slang and colloquialisms in futuristic fiction, do what Firefly did and invent some. Writers that do that are goram shiny.

The fact that all three finalists came away with some cash was a surprise.

The fact that it was nowhere near a million dollars was not.

Overall, it was an interesting finale though.

Watched the last episode of Marvel's Secret Invasion in the weekend.

Kind of an anti-climax, but yet quite climactic at the same time.

It went a little off the boil for me towards the end of the series, but overall, I quite enjoyed it. Much preferred the "Cold War" feel to the earlier episodes than the typical Marvel fare later in the series.
