I could be wrong, but just a quick scan of their homepage this morning it looks like almost 50% of the content is premium - or am I overcharging here?

I count just under 30% as premium on their homepage. I thought I heard during the interview on the radio yesterday that they claimed about 20% as premium

The sceptic in me always wants to question these numbers.

It isn't clear from the article, but would the 10,000 people signed up to the digital platform include people already paying for the physical version of the paper?  And thus they get their online version account as part of that?  Kinda like Spark giving Lightbox away for free and claiming how many people use it...

They specifically said it excludes the physical subscription numbers.

I wish they had put the announcement behind the wall so that I couldn’t see it.

Just having a quick look this morning and they even class their "sideswipe" area as Premium now, sideswipe tend to be photos / comments that are sent into them of dumb things like peoples parking.

Shhh. Don't want to mention it too loudly, but looks like Sideswipe is not behind the paywall today.

Wonder if that is a change or a mistake?

One good thing is at least I don't have to read Leighton Smith's very ignorant, one-sided, narrow-minded view of the world anymore. Pity Mike Hosking (and his wife's) are both free though.

Actually reading a viewpoint that is different to yours is a good idea from time to time otherwise you end up in an echo chamber. Assuming you want a balanced input to what is happening.

They keep changing things, but it's still possible to read all the articles for free.

That's like saying the NRA are a very sensible organisation who are looking out for everyone's interests, not just gun owners (but really, they're not).

I did used to listen to Leighton on ZB back in the day, but eventually I found his arrogance and know-it-all attitude (even when he was proven wrong) quite annoying TBH. Not for me, thanks.

It does not, however, in your example, mean that the NRA are never worth listening to.

I would say that gun enthusiasts may sometimes be worth listening to if they can rationally explain what the uses and attractions of gun ownership are. It can be worthwhile to gain these kinds of insights, especially if you come from a different background. Conversely, the NRA is never worth listening to. It is a corrupt lobby and propaganda organisation devoted only to furthering its own ends, regardless of the interests of its members.

I wasn't having a debate on gun issues. I can't explain what I find fun to someone who does not find it fun. I don't bother trying.

I was making the point (based on the example above) that surely most people of differing views should not simply be excluded on principle.

With all those paying subscribers, it looks like the Herald can finally afford to hire a teenager who has read Programming for Dummies. I rarely bother looking at their site but today I did and I was amused to discover that the Fixer extension no longer works. It even appears that a specific response to it has been created. With the extension enabled, a popover obscures the screen inviting you to subscribe. Without the extension, it works as before, with a text fadeout after the first few lines. Of course the programming 101 student has still not fixed the real problem, since all the text is still available in one place, and can be easily accessed in the usual manner. So you can't look at the pictures but you can still read the articles. I guess some would call that progress.

I dont visit the Herald online anymore. I get NZ Herald and Bay of Plenty Times subscription. When it went paywall I never received free access to the Herald online so rang them. They gave me new login info. So haung up and logged on. Still wanted me to pay for access.  No way. I didnt want to wait ages on phone again so just dont visit the online and use Radio New Zealand instead
