Aramex actually delivered a package today, in the middle of, well, this. On the one hand I'm damn impressed, but on the other a million snarky comments also suggest themselves.

It was an Amazon item so I'm guessing they have some pretty ironclad performance guarantees with Amazon that don't apply for normal senders.

gzt: I too was wondering about window taping.

If you've got UV-reflective or similar foil fitted to the windows, pretty much essential in north and east-facing rooms, you've already got a pretty good level of protection there, you can whack that stuff with a hammer and, like a car windscreen, it'll crack but not shatter.

OTOH panes of glass can stand up to a remarkable amount of wind. I grew up in a place in a very exposed location with giant picture windows and when storms hit you could see the glass bending in and out in a worrying manner, but we were never concerned about it shattering.

Marine fittings can get quite pricey, you can also get them from generic hardware places like Mitre 10 and Bunnings, just make sure it's 316 stainless not 302/304.

Maybe this is going to be a fizzer in Wellington, only a slight breeze blowing and the ferries are going back and forth obliviously.

I swear when this is over am going to plan shutters, simply can’t go through another year of storm dramas and not sleeping all night in case the windows blow in. Actually on the SW side where there's a door, it gets sucked outwards by the wind so badly we have extra handles top and bottom to hold it in.

Does anyone know the relative benefits, if any, of single vs. double glazing for high winds? A quick Google search isn't turning up much beyond the usual noise/thermal benefits, and then discussions of custom storm glazing.

Technically it's a council reserve, but my place is the only property with anything like easy access, so it is, for all intents and purposes, mine :)

My grandparents found taping the windows very effective at minimizing damage.

Admittedly, they were worried about Luftwaffe bombs, not cyclones, but still...

cost a lot lot more to repair with double glazing. the glass strength is still down to a single pane. there is options for laminated glass, which reduces noise and better safety wise.

It has not arrived in Te Whanganui-a-Tara yet. It was always forecast to reach here Tuesday.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.
