The wind is strong but compared to last night it's 10% of the strength.

bit over dramatic dont you think? its gusting 40-50kph right now, there is no way it was 400-500kph last night in auckland. it might have been at a stretch double what is now, last night on the shore.

Wind force goes up by the square, so only about 3.3* the velocity, which seems plausible.
Although I realise there was also some hyperbole involved.

neb: Does anyone know the relative benefits, if any, of single vs. double glazing for high winds? A quick Google search isn't turning up much beyond the usual noise/thermal benefits, and then discussions of custom storm glazing.

that a wind gust hast the break 2 sheets of glass rather than one?

Could be more to it than that, there's an air cushion in between the two sheets that could make the outer sheet harder to break than single glazing. In practice I have no idea, which is why I'm asking.

The intent being to check whether it's cheaper/better to fit double glazing than storm shutters, which probably aren't cheap and add a lot of ugly to a house.

cost a lot lot more to repair with double glazing. the glass strength is still down to a single pane. there is options for laminated glass, which reduces noise and better safety wise.

We got laminated, which was only marginally more expensive than non-laminated, but more for UV protection than noise. Would definitely recommend this if you're getting double glazing put in.

double glazing should be vacuum or a dry inert gas in between the sheets. windows typically break from impact from debris rather than wind force. any gas between the sheets won't do anything to stop impact forces.

double glazing or storm shutters? different things for different reasons.

And thats fine, but not everybody handles a situation the same as others. If someone is scared and worried, they are scared and worried. Im in CHC the EQs were no issue to me, I had physical faith in our house at that time. The neighbours were beside themselves. I spent a lot of time there consoling them. Everyone handles things their own way, thats all I'm saying

Ok the forecasted wind and rain has arrived.

SW winds means now my neighbour takes the brunt shielding us. Last night we took one for the team.

Yes the breeze has certainly picked up here again. Raining all day, but nowhere near as heavy as the flooding day a few weeks ago.

Very calm in the Horowhenua, under a wind warning from 6pm tonight until noon tomorrow. Crossing my fingers for a quiet night. On Nullschool it looks like it's moving slowly south, not so much south-east as it was earlier 😨

Howling winds here, rain is about the same, but feels worse since it's being launched at the house on the back of the wind.

Rain and wind is picking up in Thames and possibility that the spillway on the river will operate at high tide so will cut us off for a while. Got to love this summer weather.

Yes, the high pressure area thats been mentioned here and the weather news, is blocking the natural E to SE and dissipation as sea temp reduces. Now, its holding its own, if not winding up, pun not intended, and rain is up. Lots of hot wet air from very much North is rotating down.

A house doesn’t experience something like “wind chill” if that’s what you’re getting at as it’s external temperature is close to the environment. I guess single glazing is warmer so there may be some effect. Mainly it would be the airtightness of a window or building that would have the most influence in the wind.
