Tonight's news on Newshub

"Quality" news right there. Never asked the same question to the previous two PMs.

This is why some media are going broke.

If by that you mean "Why didn't they ask the two previous PMs why they had 7 social media managers?" the answer is probably "Because the two previous PMs didn't run their whole campaign on the fact that the public service had hired thousands of comms people who are all completely useless and should be fired."

Well, I just subscribed to Newsroom Pro. Stuff is fine - and I was contributing to them via PressPatron for ages before they made access to much of The Post etc. subscription-only - but we need as much journalism as we can get these days.

People love to claim that retrenchment and financial pressure in the media sector is a result of the media not promoting their particular political views. The commercial realities are far more complex than that.

I did the same last week. I consume a lot of RNZ content, but among commercial media companies I think Newsroom is our best chance of sustaining a high quality media offering with an objective and clinical style of delivery. They have done some very good work with material such as The Detail, The Boy in the Water and the Orangi Tamariki uplifts.

Well Mike McRoberts won't be on the revamped programme

Others can comment on the positive or other outcomes from this decision.

Well, the writing's on the wall. I doubt Stuff would want to fork out the type of salary he would be on. There's no money to splash around for Stuff I would have thought.

I wish him well. I've always enjoyed his reporting.

He was a good guy in real life apparently, too. I wonder if Samantha Hayes will end up being their sole newsreader then? It will be interesting to see what Stuff does.

With only 11 weeks remaining I reckon they'll try to salvage what they can from the format of the 7pm Ryan Bridge show that never launched so it'll probably be Ryan and Tova. No doubt some past personalities will be brought back as panelists. I don't think it will be a full hour of news reading in a traditional format.

Speaking of Ryan Bridge, I believe he's going to be the new host for ZB's early morning show, just before Mike Hosking, replacing Kate Hawkesby (who was pretty crap, TBH).

I think that's a bit of a misrepresentation. Personally, I don't think the issue is whether or not the news media promotes my political views. There are two issues:

  • The first is that the news media promotes any political views. That isn't their job, even though they seem to think it is. I don't want them promoting particular views on any subjects (climate change, the Treaty, equality, abortion or whatever) even if they are parroting views that align strongly with my own, or otherwise telling me how to think. I want them to simply report what is going on, factually, clinically, and in as straightforward and unbiased non-partisan manner as is possible.
  • The second is that the media isn't really reporting much news at all these days. They have opted for lazy talking-head opinion pieces and "human interest" rubbish over any serious analysis of reporting. We were away for a few days last week, and the place we were staying only had satellite Freeview and no internet. So the wife put the 6pm "news" on, and I use that term loosely, on a couple of times. I haven't seen it since the COVID pressers, and it was bad, and I mean really bad. Ad saturated, banal banter, and no real coverage of actual news. I think there was more on the selection of jurors for a forthcoming Kardashians trial than the Ukraine war. And nothing at all on financial markets.

I'm not surprised that their audience numbers are collapsing (even though the population is growing), and ad revenues alongside that. It's a poor quality product being put out on an increasing archaic linear medium. I am surprised that anyone bothers to watch it, or seems to think that it's something valuable that we can't afford to lose. I certainly don't think taxpayers should be on the hook to save them, or other businesses levied to keep them afloat.

At least if they die then some scarce radio spectrum that could be put to a worthwhile use might be freed up.

A sample of Stuffs recent "News" stories:

"Couple pay $1200 P.A. for power"  (yay! - our power bill is similar and we dont do anything special)

"Person charged for parking too long"

"Mum, 36, cancelled life insurance to save money, two months later she learned she had cancer" sad but not news...

I could go on...  if this is what their TV programme will be like I'll switch to TVNZ!

These types of headlines are prevalent on outlets like Stuff and NZME who are targeting a particular audience. Some people - and I'm not one of them - actually want to read lightweight dumbed down material and the market is naturally catering to that.

You won't find this type of material on RNZ or Newsroom, hence why people shouldn't make generalisations about "the media".

I guess it depends on whether you prefer dumbed down news or made up news.

RNZ is one of my main news sources and nothing I have seen there has given me the warm fuzzies for Russia. Consumers of news also have a responsibility to think about what they see and read between the lines where necessary.
