3 Body Problem on Netflix

I'm up to episode 8

It's though-provoking, interesting, somewhat far-fetched and also quite visually stunning at times.

I am wholly invested.

Started off interesting. Episode 5 was brutal but then sort of fizzled out after that. Yawn.

Be interesting to see how they tackle the other two books. I suspect they will diverge quite a bit from them.

Mr Bates vs The Post Office

I am lost for words.

The TV show concentrates on the role of the P.O. , but surely Fujitsu is just as culpable.

It's terrible to think bad software and the following witch hunt has driven people to take their own lives.

Boy Swallows Universe on Netflix

Very quirky Aussie drama/comedy that was riveting for every single one of its 7 episodes.

Thank you for the suggestion. Really enjoyed this, agree it was riveting. Felix, who played young Eli, did a fantastic job. It was nice to watch a short series with a conclusion.

Beacon 23 - sci-fi series 8 parts Prime. Space station humans and AI. Slow in places, episodes could be shorter and punchier. Still best sci-fi I've seen in a while. 7/10. 2nd series coming soon.

Interesting fact. I grew up in Beenleigh where much of the filming was done for Boy Swallows Universe. My sister used to own 5 Cameron Street as an investment property up until a few years ago.

This youtube video does a good job of explaining some of the locations used in filming.

Two programmes based in the same era and with a loose association - both focus on 1700's Highwaymen.
That's where the similarities end.

The Completely Made Up Adventures of Dick Turpin, starring Noel Fielding - as I said in an earlier post, it's completely unhinged. Apple TV+

Just started watching another drama set in the same era, also about Highwaymen etc, but in this case a completely different theme: Renegade Nell on Disney+
Effectively a young newly-widowed woman comes home to her village just north of London and discovers she has "superpowers".
Adventure ensues and she and her sisters (and a friend) find themselves on the run living the lives of Highwaymen.

It's not nearly as bad as it sounds. In fact I am quite enjoying it. Just switch the brain off.

Dick Turpin - madcap comedy

Renegade Nell - action/drama/fantasy.

Awesome series ... I grew up in Brissy in the 80's and 90's.

Worked with a guy who worked as a screw at Bogga Rd and also knew someone that was also locked up inside there for 10 years.

Even went to the open day they had there after they closed the male section down, definately not a place to be in.

Also had a girlfriend from Chile who use to live in Darra.

At the time that suburb was full of migrants from Vietnam, El Salvadore etc.

Definately brought back memories.

https://www.primevideo.com/detail/The-Old-Man/0FPV1FMMUL6UH9X5HWJDF7S8YW

The old man starts off well as a spy action thriller but dithers here and there with metaphysical musings about identity, self and other blah blah as it heads to its' inevitable conclusion.

However, the inevitable conclusion I anticipated did not materialise. I was left feeling a bit empty and unresolved. I didn't shout at the TV or throw a slipper because there were others in the room, but I felt like it.

7/10

Ending 2/10

I have 2 episodes to go. Episodes 1-4 were a bit all over the place, episode 5 was visually a treat (but, as you say, quite brutal), episode 6 was pretty meh and I feel like the mystery is now gone because they (seem to) have explained everything that's going on with 2 episodes still to go. But we'll see.

How long did it take the sci-fi nerds here to recognize Keiko from Star Trek TNG/DS9? I didn't straight away as she's considerably older now (plus I think they aged her up even more with makeup).

I tried watching the first 15mins but gave up. Is it worth persevering?

Welcome to Wrexham season 2 - halfway through it. I had forgotten how invested I get in this show!
So well put together - one of the best documentaries I've seen (purely from an entertainment and engagement perspective).

It is definitely slow in places like 2001 odyssey slow. It gets better. Overall it was worth it. I was hooked after two point five episodes so it takes a while. If it had not been a long weekend I would not have got started/resumed.

FineWine:

gehenna: Shōgun is fantastic

Absolutely Bloody Fantastic. 9/10 maybe heading for a 10/10

Great authentic looking costumes, makeup, hair styles, scenes and prop's and of course the cgi.

Cosmo Jarvis voice has that Richard Burton, Shakespearean, sexiness to it - fabulous. In fact close your eyes and you would think it was Richard Burton. Though the bulk of the actors are Japanese you can tell they are seasoned actors all with great performances. All the actors including the children are very very good.

The script is fantastic and is so well written that everyone can follow the political and religious (catholic/protestant) intrigues with ease. Though a large part is Subtitled, it does not distract from the show at all.

This is an overall winner for Disney +.

(Minor gripe) The Japanese script is a bit disjointed in style, sometimes era-accurate, sometimes jarringly modern, but that's pretty minor in the grand scheme of things.

My (Japanese) wife is very fussy when it comes to historical accuracy in Japanese dramas, and she has nothing but praise for the show's historical accuracy.
One tiny detail, such as when Lady Fuji receives the pistols - she first covers her hands with her sleeves. My wife's comment "Regular Japanese historical dramas wouldn't bother going that far."
