This is a story I hadn't heard, about an Australian priest found guilty of pedophilia. The priest belongs to the Australian and New Zealand Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ANZ ROCOR).

A fellow high-ranking priest told his congregation that it was wrong for them to condemn the guilty priest convicted of sexual abuse.

“Sheep do not judge their shepherd,” he told them. He went further saying judging the pedophilic priest was a deadly sin, equivalent of judging Christ.

The scandalous case that sank the Aussie Cossack revealed: Sydney Morning Herald

A senior priest of the Russian church in Australia can be revealed as a pedophile after a court suppression order concealed his name from the public as he faced trial.

Meanwhile, a devout Kremlin propagandist has chalked up 930 days hiding in Sydney’s Russian consulate after flagrantly breaching the same suppression order, having played a bizarre part in the priest’s downfall.

Alexis Rosentool is a senior figure in the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia, a branch of the church that went into exile during the rise of the Soviet Union in 1920. Last week he was found guilty of four charges related to his abuse of three males, this masthead can reveal.

Two male victims were indecently assaulted in the 1980s, and Rosentool had an “unlawful sexual relationship” with a child victim two decades later.

Details of the crime are sparse because Rosentool’s name has been suppressed by the courts for years. The order suppressing his name only lifted as the priest was taken into custody to await sentencing.

A child sex offender who says he felt “traumatised” by a rehabilitation programme is taking the attorney-general to court, seeking a written apology and $575,000 in damages.

This type of article reliably generates outrage. In practice many of the claims and defenses made by offenders have almost zero chance of success.

Yeah, I guess it's essentially rage-bait ( and it worked on me 😊 ) but assuming it's factual it's still a waste of the court's time and taxpayer's money (so my rage is justified 😊 )

I'm trying to think of something to say here which will not end up with me in time-out (or worse) and failing.

Clearly if he feels this way after the "treatment" then it has not worked so he should be treated in other ways.

I have the game Final Fantasy XII on Playstation 2. My PS2 is getting old, so I started migrating over to emulation. However, when I booted up FF12 under the PCSX2 emulator, I was surprised to find that it plays a completely different opening video. I figured it was an emulation bug, so I popped onto YouTube to get footage of the correct and incorrect videos so I could log a bug.

Now for the bizarre bit: I cannot, for the life of me, find any recording - or even mention - of the video that my real PS2 plays. Every YouTube video I can find begins with a prerendered video of Balthier's airship sailing into the clouds, and clips of other prerendered footage. Mine opens with in-game footage of Ashe summoning an esper, then continues on with other in-game shots. This video file obviously exists on the disc - and so must the other one since PCSX2 is playing it - but I'm absolutely baffled as to why it seems to be "phantom" footage that nobody else has seen.

Edit: And, of course, now that I've actually posted this I've suddenly found an 8-year-old reference to the "missing" video. Apparently it only happens with this specific pressing, AND only if you have a widescreen TV. The emulator defaults to fullscreen. [Edit 2: Confirmed that changing it to widescreen - which I thought I'd done, but not properly - makes it play the other video.]

A few days ago Mrs Code went to Chemist Warehouse and bought

  • Paracetamol 100 x 500mg tablets  - ‘Ethics’ brand
  • Ibuprofen 100 x 200mg tablets - same brand.

Total price was $8.48. We thought that sounded ridiculously cheap.

Out of curiosity I just checked the Unichem Pharmacy website and found the identical Ethics products packs:

  • Paracetamol $16.99
  • Ibuprofen $18.99

Call it $36 total - but, to be fair, Unichem do have another brand of 100 x 500mg Paracetamol at $7.

Chemist Warehouse do not charge for prescription filling. They and their similar competitors must be wreaking havoc on the traditional High St chemist shops - similar to what happened to other retailers when TWL arrived on the scene 20-odd years ago.

Paknsave has a similar low price or lower for those as Chemist Warehouse. Random page says $2.80 for x20.

Handy if that's all you use before they inevitably expire.

That’s $14 for 100 tabs - not a ‘similar low price or lower’ to the $4-odd I am citing. Not much different to the $17 at Unichem.

And what happened to local independent general stores 40-50 years ago when supermarkets arrived.

Our passports need renewing and we wanted to do it online. I started with my passport.

If you look up Passport Renewal on the DIA website, it says you need to be registered with Realme. So I signed into the RM website and was told my RM had expired and needed to be renewed. Started the process and came unstuck at the photo upload stage. You need to give consent for the website to access your device’s camera. Completely different to the passport photo upload process, the RM ‘photo’ needs to be a selfie - because there’s also a selfie video involved.

I just could not get the cameras to work. Tried iPhone, iPad and MacBook - all of which are stated to be OK/usable. Spent more than hour farting around with it. Out of desperation I called RM support.

Me: [Explained the situation]

RM: Oh yes, the Apple photo functionality has been broken for some time. It’s supposed to be fixed by 31 July. [That was 10 days away at the time]. We’ve been advising people to get their photo done by a third-party photographer.

Me: How have you been advising people about this?

RM: There’s a banner on the website.

Me: No there is not.

RM: Oh. We’ll get someone to look at that.

So I was planning to go to AA NZ who apparently will do the photo for free (for everyone) and they will send it to RM.

In the meantime, I tried signing into the DIA website - passport renewal page. It took me to RM and I signed in, and onward to the passport renewal process - without any mention of my RM being expired. Whiskey Tango? I was able to complete the application.

So I got a result after a few hours - but what a shambles. People might say why didn’t I just go to the DIA site in the first place. In hindsight I could have  - but DIA refers to RM - so I checked in there first. Regardless of that, the RM website is seriously broken in its own right - with the photo issue. There’s also a disconnect between RM and DIA - one says I'm expired and other doesn't seem to mind. I would have thought that integrity between the two is paramount.

For the above reasons I renewed our passports on a paper application and dropped them in, paid on the spot by CC.  It was so easy with none of the frustration of photos not uploading and signing in to other sites. Am fine now for 9 years and 6 months.

I seriously considered doing that - but I do have plenty of time and it also gives me something about which to be a Grumpy Old Man. 😀
