Sellers on TradeMe / eBay / AliExpress who blatently lie re the specifications of their product!

eg: Camera listed as IP65 & Waterproof. But fogs up sheltered outside in the rain.

Supplier replies "It's waterproof for inside only"!!

I once worked with an assistant who had to prepare or update simple spreadsheets. After working with her for a while I was astounded to see that she added up, on a calculator, all the values in a column and typed the sum into the bottom cell. I kid you not.

I worked for a South African Engineering Project Manager in 2003 who did exactly that too. It's been a running joke between those of us that were on the project, and remain friends, ever since - it inevitably comes up in conversation whenever we meet.

Not quite the same environment but similar concept

I worked for a year on a dairy farm before going up to University. We used to feed the calves with powdered milk specially formulated for them. Each calf got one bucket (we had many buckets, all the same size) twice a day.

The cowman, who knew a great deal about animal husbandry but was an ornery SOB with a short fuse once chased me round the yard brandishing a bit of 2x4 until I seized a pitchfork to defend myself. Why?

Well, let's say each calf bucket was 5 litres of milk. The cowman made up each individual bucket one at a time. I figured it was more efficient to make, say, 25 litres at once and fill 5 buckets. Same amount of powder and water, but mix only once = faster.

No way would he accept that this was in fact true - he was convinced that somehow the outcome would be different in a significant way - and when I refused to cease my efficiency method, I got chased by a very angry old man!

Westpac's online banking. When trying to make a payment, it seems to be 50/50 as to whether it'll let me enter cents, or just dollars. It also often tells me that the (pre-filled) payment date is invalid, then accepts it if I try a second time.

These issues are relatively new but have still been occurring off and on for a few months now; you'd think that this sort of thing would be fixed fairly quickly.

Edit: For the absence of doubt, this is occurring on two different PCs with different Internet connections, different operating systems and different browsers.

I've had exactly the same explaining engine coolant concentration. As you cannot conveniently get all the coolant out you simply flush it with water, then work out, based on the cooling system's specified capacity from the workshop manual, the amount of concentrate needed to get the desired final concentration based on the total volume of the cooling system, and put that in neat, then top the system with water. No matter how many times I explained it to one friend, he insisted that it would be "too strong" (not that there's any such thing with coolant anyway). Even showing him that the resulting mix in the cooling system was correct to 35% with the correct hydrometer wouldn't convince him.

Not entirely correct, if you have a far too higher concentration of coolant - say higher than 80% then the engine will not get sufficient cooling that the water contributes too.

Not entirely correct, if you have a far too higher concentration of coolant - say higher than 80% then the engine will not get sufficient cooling that the water contributes too.

While water does have a higher specific heat capacity than concentrate, you'd need to be in enduring extreme service conditions for 100% ethyl glycol to be unable to sufficiently cool an engine with a properly designed and functioning cooling system.

Some people just seem to really struggle with mathematical concepts. Never mind important scientific concepts like the law of conservation of energy (thermodynamics). Or they insist on doing things a certain way. Only because they have always done things that way.

As for refilling engine coolant, the above method also means that you don't end up with any leftover coolant.

Phone call from my wife to say that she's had a minor car accident - some woman in an SUV reversed quickly out of a car park - damaging the front of her car - while she was stopped in traffic - then the woman got out and started hurling abuse at my wife because her car was "too small and low" to be seen - so it was my wife's fault, in her opinion.
