Hugh Jackman would have been another great choice. It's obvious to me that TC never read the books or I seriously doubt he would have considered playing the role.

I would not have problem with George Clooney in this role.

He might dirty his nails doing a movie like this. He isn't really a good tough guy, though he is reasonably versatile.

Perhaps he did and thought he may be able to rise to the challenge. As actors you would expect them to take on roles that most people would consider beyond their abilities - that's what make their work interesting to them. Actors (and actresses) have often played roles as the opposite sex, race, backgrounds (accents), etc. Same applies to directors who have worked in a variety of genres.

I think there is a difference between actors stretching to fill a role like say the heath ledger and the joker, and not physically being a match.

Agreed. You would hardly cast Liam Neeson to play Frodo for example

I'm not saying TC is the best actor considering his height (or rather lack of it). I did note that Billy Connolly was cast as a dwarf in The Hobbit - so this issue is not really a problem with movie-making.I guess it's more the acceptance of the audience of the suitability of the actor to the role.

So what we're waiting to see (in the film, not trailer) is whether TC can pull this role off. As a long term fan of the novels, I hope he does, so that more movies in he series can be made.

If Liam could pull off a good American accent, he'd be better as Reacher than Cruise.

I am lloking forward to it because I love the books, just hope they can make Cruise as Badass as Reacher. I hope Lee Child gets some input.

Wonder if that is code for: I don't like the movie.

It is difficult to define but sometimes the movie/TV makers capture the magic of the book and sometimes they don't. William Gibson or Stephen King adaptations anybody? But every once in a while they get it right too.

I think the Jack Reacher books could lend themselves to being good movies as there is plenty of action, they move at a reasonable pace and not too much internal monologue. In the books Jack is a simple character who travels in what he is wearing with no ties. He turns up, does good and walks off into the sunset. I think this suits the complicated times we now live in. But hey, who knows?

Anyway, movies usually represent a big pay day for authors, relative to what they make selling books, so on that score alone I'll probably at least rent  the DVD or buy a ticket.

That wasn't the impression I had, it was simply they didn't ask him for much input. Unless have experience with screenwriting I think it would be hard for him to significantly contribute. I get the impression he feels TC is the wrong choice but he has no say. He once told me that once the book is accepted by the publisher he no longer has any say about how it's priced, how it's distributed (Some of the books weren't available via Kindle for a while).

As he said, he is just the guy who writes the book.

I am not really a guy who feels comfortable around celebrities. I think Justin Marshall (Rugby Player) is for example but when I was in the business class lounge a week or so back I was too shy to go and say hello, thinking it wasn't fair to interrupt him. However when I got a chance to meet LC I forced myself to go and get a copy of my favourite novel signed by him. He was really cool in person!

Christopher McQuarrie the director/screenplay writer also did the screenplay for The Usual Suspects. He possibly wouldn't think he needed much help.

Lee Child was possibly trying to stop Tom Cruise ever playing the role when he made Jack so big. He should have made him black. Idris Elba is almost in the height/weight ballpark.

LOL if you were going to have a black JR you would have to consider Snipes or better still, Washington.
