networkn: Hugh Jackman would have been another great choice. It's obvious to me that TC never read the books or I seriously doubt he would have considered playing the role.

Perhaps he did and thought he may be able to rise to the challenge. As actors you would expect them to take on roles that most people would consider beyond their abilities - that's what make their work interesting to them. Actors (and actresses) have often played roles as the opposite sex, race, backgrounds (accents), etc. Same applies to directors who have worked in a variety of genres.

I think there is a difference between actors stretching to fill a role like say the heath ledger and the joker, and not physically being a match.?
sxz: Agreed. You would hardly cast Liam Neeson to play Frodo for example

Wonder if that is code for: I don't like the movie.
It is difficult to define but sometimes the movie/TV makers capture the magic of the book and sometimes they don't. William Gibson or Stephen King adaptations anybody? But every once in a while they get it right too.
I think the Jack Reacher books could lend themselves to being good movies as there is plenty of action, they move at a reasonable pace and not too much internal monologue. In the books Jack is a simple character who travels in what he is wearing with no ties. He turns up, does good and walks off into the sunset. I think this suits the complicated times we now live in. But hey, who knows?
Anyway, movies usually represent a big pay day for authors, relative to what they make selling books, so on that score alone I'll probably at least rent the DVD or buy a ticket.

You are now my hero.

That wasn't the impression I had, it was simply they didn't ask him for much input. Unless have experience with screenwriting I think it would be hard for him to significantly contribute. I get the impression he feels TC is the wrong choice but he has no say.
