mmmm. Tom Cruise as Reacher - too pretty, too small. Gonna be hard to watch after reading and visualising the books.

Good way to ruin great books. I feel the Cohen brothers could have nailed the movie, looks like blockbuster rubbish in that trailer.

I fear you may be right. I will watch, but I think it will be hard to make Tom Cruise as cool as Jack Reacher.

It may be possible to enjoy this movie if one (a) puts aside one's established opinions on Tom Cruise and (b) remembers that the filmmakers are making their vision of the story, not yours. This second part is true for all movies made from well established novels.

I for one am looking forward to seeing another vision for the series, especially given the shortcomings of the star.

Feels very similar to the once tried adaptation of James Lee Burke, Heavens Prisoners....Bad adaptation of a great authors work.

The problem with inept adaptations of much loved books is that if you haven't read the books you have no idea what the hell is going on, if you have read the books they just ruined some great memories and you therefore hate the film and those who made it for that.

If the film maker is a total genius then it works, but that isn't often.

Yeah, Tom Cruise wasn't who I had in mind when I thought of Jack Reacher.

Hmmm, the books describe his as a big guy .. even Wikipedia says "Reacher is a giant, standing at 6' 5" tall (1.96m) with a 50-inch chest, and weighing between 210 and 250 pounds (100–115 kg)."

So ... Tom Cruise ...... ?

I don't know, I kinda liked it. The books are great, but they would still have been great without a 6'5" Reacher. Admittedly, I couldn't reconcile the Tom Cruise Reacher with the version I had in my head, but I'm OK with that. I don't expect the movie to be a cinematic masterpiece but then the books are hardly literary masterpieces either, just good ol' fashioned fun.

Too small. Jack Reacher is a bit taller than that...

Shortcomings being the operative word.

Intimidation was one of Reachers tools to prevent unnecessary violence, Cruise does not have the build or gravitas to intimidate people by simply standing there. Sure an action scene can make him look badass but Reacher is a character who does not need to move to be badass.

Furyk I hate Tom Cruise. And how on earth did he get cast into a film based series of books I really enjoy!

Oh the humanity.

I know a movie often doesn't live up to the book, but casting Tom Cruise - what were they thinking?  It's not at all believable for me.  He's no Jack Reacher.  Tom Cruise looks pathetic against the "bad guys".

Except that the death toll seems to be going up in some of the recent novels. I suspect Lee Child has got bored and is taking the micky.

If you really wanted to stay outside the system I don't think being 6'5" and built like a tank would help.

Obviously ignoring the fact that he's already 'James Bond' I suspect Daniel Craig could have made a convincing 'Jack Reacher'...

Just can't imagine Jack jumping on a couch somehow...

That is the most unconvincing trailer ever. Vin Diesel can make crap like this look good. Cruise, meh. Unless there is some serious and smart Cohen brother-ing not shown in the trailer.

Usual approach with Cruise is put him on a box for height and hire shorter actors. Cohen brothers have not gone down that road. It would have been more convincing if they had reversed the story and made Reacher a short bloke like Cruise and played on that effect.
