Talk of the love campaigns reminds me of Cadbury. Change 3 things (ingredients/recipe, more costly packaging, reduced bar size/produce portions) and then people get upset... So they change one thing back expecting the customers to think they've 'won' and forget they're now paying more for less than they were before. Actually was it 4 changes, weren't they going to manufacture off shore as well?

This whole fake gift thing gets me. Shades of communications companies giving me an extra 2000 texts when I've only used 7 anyway, or doubling my broadband data after downloading (some) content has just been made illegal so most users will be using less data...

Microsoft and windows 8 now have similar informal messages too. I got an error after restarting the computer that said something along the lines of, our computer has run into a problem it can't handle, and it needs to restart :( . The use of the frowny face is a bit odd and informal. I guess the old version was a blue screen of death. So it seems these big companies are trying to be more friendly and informal in the way they communicate with you

Ironically (given my rant above) it actually works though.  People are far less tolerant of system admin requests to restart a server etc at short notice when you attach something cute/non threatening along with it.

I trialled a campaign myself last year to attach one of these pictures to every short notice outage request/fault notification etc communication:

After a good run with few end user interruptions I actually had users say they missed the little man, and they looked forward to outages as they got to see a new picture.  I thought the experiment went pretty well!

I am not sure what style that graphic is in, but I like it, and wanted to add a few like it to our website, when I saw a company overseas use it in their marketing.

This is a good point. I guess it is called 'humanising' things, and trademe are doing the same sort of thing.
