The Wikipedia page on the Oxford Comma (aka Serial Comma) has a good pro/con list and reasons why you would or wouldn't use it. Many style guides dictate one way or the other, although the consensus (from what I've seen, especially in academia) seems to lean towards its use (although I'm personally against it).

On a related note, I noticed that one of the shops in town is under 'new' management. At least it doesn't have any Unnecessary Capitals.

The worst misuse of written English I've seen lately - a headline on our favourite news site:

Man updates his "facebook" while on the run.

Between all the grammar and spelling mistakes and its pointless human interest dribble stories, I don't know why anyone still goes there, but I do...

I am a wannabe Grammar Nazi and have OCD - I don't suffer at all...

A key part of my job is editing documents. If there was ever an organisation that suffered from collective overcapitalitis it would be where I work (NZDF). If it's important, use a capital is the General Philosophy. (And, seriously, that's how it would be written by some!) It sometimes seems I'm the only one fighting against this...

I'm happy to acknowledge I'm a pedant when it comes to grammar etc. (goes with the inclusion of the word 'anal' in my job title!). I personally think it's reasonable that people should use their knowledge of grammar and spelling in most situations, including less formal settings like here on GZ. It's all about communication: the more accurate the writing, typically the easier it is to read and understand. Why place unnecessary barriers to communication? There are a few people here whose posts take heaps longer to read simply because they appear to have an aversion to things as simple as capital letters at the start of a sentence and full-stops at the end.

A few months ago there was excited talk about the 'death of the comma' (similar to the case of the 'death of the apostrophe'). During the segment on this on Nat Rad they read out some classic examples of why the claim was so premature; I can't remember the specific examples but the internet's full of them. One of my favourites is "Let's eat Grandpa" (as opposed to "Let's eat, Grandpa")!

(Edited for minor corrections - confirmation of my anal nature!.)
