freitasm: I look at these and see the Croatian holding the Brazilian:

Hmmm I see two still shots that show the Croatian had a hand on the Brazilian; that in itself is not a foul.  Fred milked a penalty from minimal contact and that is a blight on the game.  If this is the standard to be applied there are going to be a lot of penalties.

Also regardless of whether it was a penalty or not, the other thing that is worth noting is that we have the ability to see these things over and over but the ref has to make an instant call.  Inevitably they are going to get some of them wrong.

That's a big difference between soccer and rugby: there's no back office that makes the call. It's happening "in real time".

Yes which personally I think is a good thing as it is all part of the drama.

Video refs don't always stop the controversy either.

well i thought maybe i was, so i searched the internet.

it seems every neutral news site, football expert, and of course social site that i stumbled on had a problem with the penalty. who knows

I believe the winner was already decided by Blatter. He was seen wheeling a wheel barrow full of money bags out of the meeting.

You can keep asserting this any number of times you like and it doesn't make you right. Read the write up on the laws of the game that I posted. I am a football referee, actually had to pass an exam on the rules, and make my living interpreting real laws of the land, am not a Brazilian, and I back the referee 100%. Again, I emphasise the obvious: you may have your opinions on the game and how it should be played but you're not free to make up the laws of the game as it pleases you.

Which part of the official laws of the game permit a player to deliberately lay their hand on the opposition in attack and actually holding on?

Joker97: your trolling really is pretty poor. Surprisingly enough, most of the whingers are of course Croatians and, stunning surprise yet again, English footballers whose league is blighted by excessive physical contact. And again I ask the question: why are uninformed people like you okay with Lovren cheating (remember, it's called FOOTBALL for a reason) but feel the need to go all indignant about a player exaggerating a actual foul?

I'm apprehensive about the game tonight. Spain will play their usual "we will sit on the ball - come and get it" tactics. Hopefully we won't have to kick the s**t out of them to obtain the ball like in last WC's final.

Yeeha, the orange juggernaut is rolling. (Must confess to sharing your apprehension an hour ago though, Scul.)

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

I wonder how much Louis Van Gaal (pronounce van - HAA) can motivate the team ie how far they could go - barring unforseen refereeing shockers that is.

Traditionally stars that have had a strong European league season are too tired ... I don't remember any dutch players winning any accolades ... so ... let's see ...

Spain tried to do a Phil but the acting wasn't quite up to scratch overall

can't beat Nemyar's best though

I don't blame the players, as FIFA calls for it without technology to pick up cheats/offsides etc ... just that someone's gonna exit the cup feeling short changed ...

I enjoy watching a bit of football... Even had my premiere league pass.

The one aspect of football that really annoys me is the players running at the ref appealing for something or protesting against something.

It's pointless, have you ever seen a ref change is mind.

The difference it the ref-player interaction is profoundly different in rugby and hockey to name a few.

It ruins things..... Just get on with the game.

I think the ref shouldn't back away, stand their ground and if they get touched by the player card them. ( all of them)

A.

Was I the only one that tipped Spain?

There goes my chance to win $5M from the TAB.
