Who is following the FIFA World Cup 2014 here?

Now that it is officially open, with a Brazil 3 x 1 Croatia... Any favourites? Comments on games?

The English team visited an orphanage in Brazil today.

“Its heartbreaking to see their sad little faces, with no hope”, said Jose, age 6.

Impressive that Marcelo actually came back for the second half. But yes, that will be a mark in his CV...

Someone tell Brazil this is the World Cup - not the Oscars!
Someone's trying to qualify for the Olympic Diving team there...

Brasil ALWAYS dive. Sometimes to get a penalty, sometimes to milk a red card. That's how world cups are won. Not by skill, but by chance and manipulation.

- hand of god
- goals that didn't count
- offsides
- red cards
- penalties from diving

In fact our most successful WC campaign - was it like 0-0, 0-0, 0-0 or something like that?

To be fair, most of the teams overact. And it wasn't just a random dive, the croatian dude *did* grab the brazil player's arm to hold him back, which is a foul - it just didn't look enough to make him fall over. Most players in the major teams play that sort of thing up to try and get a better result.

Have you actually watched the opening match? The penalty was valid, the Croatian was holding the Brazilian guy in the area with both hands. There was no acting after that, the referee saw and applied the rule.

i watched it again 10 times.
- the croat had 4 fingers on the brazilian's left shoulder. 4 fingers. right hand had nothing on the player or the shirt for that matter.
- the 4 fingers was touching the brazilian's left shoulder for around 0.5 seconds

had nothing to do with his tumble. nothing.

[edit - another angle - the left hand grabbed the arm for 0.5 seconds]

- look i have nothing agaisnt penalties for fouls. but either giving or milking a penalty to win the game (unlike rugby where a single penalty pretty much means little) makes it unfair.

- have you ever seen what happens during corners? everybody grabs everybody. why is that not a penalty?

You can't just grab your opponent, it's a foul. It can fall under either holding an opponent or impeding the progress of an opponent. Just like if it were basketball.
