wasabi2k: what would happen to a member of the public if this happened?

That should happen to the minister.

Investigation and fine I believe which I also believe is what's happening to Brownlee. Don't think a member of the public would lose their job over it :-)

Unless you are part of the apparatchik - which he is the top boss.

geekiegeek: Personally I have more of an issue with the airport security person who let him through. Surely they are trained to not allow people, ANY people, to circumvent security.

Who else has this person let through?

Seriously? This is the Minister of the Crown, our country's senior politician in charge of aviation security, charging through, entourage in tow, making it clear he is in no mood for discussion, and you blame an employee way down the pecking order for not taking the stand of a lifetime? The blame sits with Brownlee - he should know better.

Yes, if his job is to insure that everybody must follow the correct boarding process and he has been told that this applies to EVERYBODY. If they are not trained to apply the rules to everybody then its a failure further up the chain and needs to be addressed.

Cops have been known to pull over MPs and other cops including commissioners so the "he's an important person so I let him through" excuse does not wash with me.

nate: It always amazes me the crap that makes the news.

For example, this was the leading item last night on one news.  The second was (and in my opinion should've been first) the bodies of those killed on MH17 returning home to the Netherlands.

Investigate, fine him and move on.

Stole my thunder nate. Totally agree. There is just so much trash news out there. Give us some real news for goodness sakes.

We have news ????
I thought we had news bites, then sports masquerading as news, then sports reporting then the weather.

If you want news, go one line, TV has nothing to report.

KiwiNZ:Remember the policeman who lost his job by doing his job and stopping a speeding Helen Clark? would you stop a high ranking Cabinet Minister? honestly would you?

No. Sorry but this is factually inaccurate. Nobody lost a job. The police personel who were driving the ministerial cars at speed were convicted. The system works. Also the convictions were later reversed on appeal.

I'm unaware of any media fuss I generally ignore it especially if they have nothing else to do.

Gerry Brownlee should be charged with whatever breach of the law he committed.

It is fundamental in a representative democracy that representatives do not use their position for any advantage and there is no reason at all not to prosecute him.

NZ follows the Westminster system in which Cabinet members bare ultimate responsibility for the actions of their Department, Mr Brownlee therefore bares ultimate responsibility.

Seriously WTF how is this a super important story. If anything I applaud him as I'd be worried he was in front of me in the queue and gets stuck while trying to walk through the metal detector :p

Just a few thoughts:

- We still don't know ALL the facts.

- Stuff ran a poll as this story was "breaking" without facts being reported at the time. People were already voting.

- I don't know how many times I have said this but the news media in this country is really letting us Kiwis down.

- Whether you like it or not none of us are Gerry Brownlee (I assume he's not on Geelzone, I cant be definitive...). He is more important than most of us, deal with that.

- Prior to domestic terrorists attacks in the US against the US, NZ had zero domestic passenger screening.

- We love to cry about government departments lacking common sense. On the face of it, it appears common sense was applied in this situation even if it looks bad.

- You have to hand it to National, they know how to handle these situations!

- I hope this wasn't Dotcoms big story... I love the fact that something so important and damning of the government is not worth the public knowing immediately.

And finally, at the rate we are going with wanting to fire politicians ("Heads must roll" is my favourite line that I guarantee I'll find in any story like this).... There will be none left!

He didnt breach any laws, it was the mistake of the guy who let him through.

One cannot tell me he didnt use his public figure influence to achieve the bypassing of security.  This is the real issue at heart, who cares about the actual incident.  This is boderline corruption, and its a slippery slope from here.

Should he lose his job?  Personally I dont think so, but the next person that tries a similar thing will.  Like a few have said already, he put that man who opened the door in awfully difficult position. Some might claim its a no-brainer, dont let him through - but in the heat of the moment, I can see how he let it slide.  I feel sorry for him because he may well lose his job, or be reprimanded.

"- Prior to domestic terrorists attacks in the US against the US, NZ had zero domestic passenger screening."  are you saying it is ok to ignore the current regulations because of that? if so, then following that logic we should ignore breath testing drivers because before we woke up to the results of drink driving we didn't do alcohol testing.

-" You have to hand it to National, they know how to handle these situations" if this was say Mr Cunliffe or Mr Norman what would National be calling for? ( disclosure I am a National supporter)

I'm not necessarily a fan, but to his credit, he has taken full responsibility (as he should) and gone out of is way to mention it's not the airport employee's fault. Hopefully that will count for something.

I really don't care less, yes he made a mistake, yes the airport security made a mistake, things will be tightened up due to this. Yes I believe that he did use his position to get through, so what. Life goes on, media jumps on bandwagon making huge fuss blowing it out of proportion. Bigger things to worry about than this in the world.
