Even the next day it feels like a terrible nightmare I can't wake from. I think it's knowing that there will be no more comedy from this amazing man. It's not to also not feel angry he would take his own life, though I do know suicide is a complicated and complex topic.

I am also very sad that he took his own life, but I think that maybe he wasn't thinking straight at all at the time and the depression and addiction finally got to him.

Such an awesome man still - Never before has my facebook news feed been so full of just one topic as it was last night...

Doing your best is much more important than being the best.

Apparently he was diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease recently. It's a lot for someone to deal with :

1) Money Problems
2) Drug Addiction
3) Alcohol Addiction
4) BiPolar Disorder
5) Depression
6) Parkinsons

Any of those things alone is a huge challenge.

Basically was diagnosed with some pretty horrendous illnesses with pretty grim outlook over a 3 year period.

Also explains why he may have suffered from depression.

Diagnosis may have been a factor:

"Wikipedia: Upon autopsy it was discovered that he had diffuse Lewy Body dementia. Williams had been incorrectly diagnosed with Parkinson's disease prior to his death; he had also been suffering from depression, anxiety, and increasing paranoia (all symptoms of DLB)."

and in the presence of this condition:

"Benzodiazepines, anticholinergics, surgical anesthetics, some antidepressants, and OTC cold remedies can cause acute confusion, delusions and hallucinations."

It states 10-15% of all dementia is Lewy Body dementia.

Lewy Body dementia was only recently added to the standard diagnostic guide. Imho systemic awareness of the condition is likely to be lacking.

My step father died last year of Lewy Body Dementia. It took him 8 years from when he first started showing symptoms to forgetting how to swallow....at which point you dry out and die if you have an order for no intervention (which he did) as they don't put you on a drip....and you essentially dehydrate and suffer organ failure. We treat dogs better than that.

Anyway....... I can understand someone like Robin Williams thinking...."That ain't gonna be me..." and defining his own end.

In a way our laws around suicide discriminate against the disabled. Some one physically capable of the act can kill themselves....but someone who is too far gone physically to do it themselves just can't get any help either.

Having watched someone go this way, I'm with Robin Williams on this one. Well done, that man.

I do not know all the circumstances but I really doubt Williams made a rational decision based on all the information and correct diagnosis.

I watched my father go through months of agony before he died.

There is no way anyone should endure such pain because of the beliefs of others.

I think anyone has the right to decide when they have had enough.

At the risk of starting an endless debate - trouble is, those left behind are devastated forever. And so they can't give as much as they could to their loved ones and so on.

I guess if you knew it was coming it could be easier, but that's an ethical debate. How does the Netherlands view it?

Williams had a long standing mental health challenge and also may have been taking medications that exacerbated the undiagnosed Lewy Body condition.

This was a suicide and there needs to be a clear alternative to that.

Assuming you are of course of sound mind! Lots of people who are terminally ill are not.

Of course. I'd like to be able to put something in place while I can - but the law doesn't allow me to even do that - which leaves only the option of a slightly premature exit.
