The very first multiplayer game I played was duke nukem. I chose dukester as my gaming name and have stuck with it.

A surname that attracts nicknames from popular culture. My siblings attract the same:
"Hammer time" the singer MC Hammer
"Sledge Hammer", "Sledge" the TV comedy
"Hammerhead" just the shark

Our first initials are M & C so we'd also get prank phone calls in the 80s.

Just a name I settled on for using bulletin boards in the early 90's and stuck with it - too lazy to change. Read it in a book somewhere.

There's dratsabs the world over these days, even a heavy metal band. Don't laugh, they're doing well...founded in 2009 and have a whole 128 likes on Facebook.

I had several nicknames in my 20's. Most were based on characters that friends identified me with: Eric Cartman was one (I still have "friends" that call me fatass).
Handsome Dan was one that came from Wayne's World...it was the least offensive and I have been said Dan for many years online now. And also in person...sometimes.

I needed a name for my character in an RPG I was playing with friends about 20 years ago and I liked it so I kept using it everywhere. It was simply what come to mind at the time, and definitely not referring in any way to Kraven the Hunter of Marvel/Spider-Man fame or Kraven from Underworld. More likely I was just hungry at the time...

from 96 to 2000 I worked in an Internet cafe in south London where we would often run 24 hour LAN gaming events, because most people had crappy PCs and no decent net connect. In the early days of Quake, I was known as Damage[iC], damage because I would camp quad damage and [iC] for the clan: Impulse Catfood (another too long story). In the first year of counter strike we ran an all-nighter playing CS only and we locked the doors = much booze was consumed. At about 6am everyone was still stupidly drunk and we stumbled through town to the McDonalds as it was the only thing that was open had hot food (damn late night burger van left at 2am). When the staff-member asked my very drunken friend what he wanted to eat, my friend replied "who gives a f*ck...it all tastes the same in here...everything tastes like coca cola!" to which the server responded "not the chicken sandwich". My friend immediately came back with "yes it f*ckin does! I don't want none of your f*ckin fizzychicken sandwich!". Quite obviously we were soon asked to leave, when we got back to the gaming I changed my player name to fizzychicken.
At the time it was one word googlewhack, only gamespy reporting that it found my player name on a server....after years of keeping the name....loads of people are using it, even had to tag -nz on to the end to keep using it in places where it already exists now.

the website of the cafe is still live even though the place has long since died, the gaming page is still stuck in 2001 even has pictures of the lads playing

h
ere's a pic of the guy in question outside the cafe on the same night mentioned above, hes the one pretending to be an engineer, using his spoon to repair a turret (a.k.a Alex holding a stool)

Started off with my Amiga as "Night Owl" , then found someone in UK was using that and making software.... thought "how dare they" so looked around for something unique.... found a book by Len Deighton called "XPD" - thought that was good as anything.... and its stuck.
Thats going back... 23yrs now ? Crap... I feel old.

Some of my friends just call me "D" in person - no idea why....

I picked up my nickname when I used to regularly play lazer strike at the Megazone in Auckland.  I was absolutely rubbish at it (ratio of shots fired to hits was ridiculous), so I started out with Trigger (as in Trigger Happy).  But when people kept mistaking me for Roy Rogers' on-screen horse, I decided to go with "Lizard", in recognition of the length of my tongue.  I've carried it forward into the online world, though there are many others out there with a Lizard name, so I often have to append a number to make it unique.

Had mine for ages. Needed a user name when signing up for ihug back in the 90s, and it was just a shortening of my then address.

Used it ever sine, can't be bothered changing it.

Mines one of those ironic nicknames. Like calling a short guy stretch. I don't tend to stress too much so huzzah!
