Yuck. The "now" flags do not look as nice as the commonwealth predecessors.

Stick with what we have.
I like our flag just the way it is.

I think your 'Yuck' comment is probably more related to pattern matching and preference for order.

What the graphic does show is that New Zealand and Australia are the most resistant (or apathetic) to changing their flag.

What would be more relevant is to poll each of those countries on their new flag.

I doubt that many would prefer their old flag.

Sideface: This is exactly why I object to the existing colonial flags - they represent someone else's ethnic background and culture, not ours.

I feel it represents my background just fine, even as a third generation born New Zealander, with English great grandparents.

I suggest changing it when NZ becomes a republic, and not before.

If you want it to unite the Kiwis, it needs to be a Silver Fern on a black background because the All Blacks is the only thing we can all agree on.

However the silver fern is a meaningless symbol to the majority of the planet.

If you want it to be instantly recognisable around the world, then it needs to be a big bold Kiwi, much like the patch worn by the NZ military when overseas, akin to the roundal used by the RNZAF.

They did represent NZ, just that things have changed. You are talking about a flag that was put together 100+ years ago now. But history is very important.

I think one of the most iconic NZ designs that is most suitable for a flag is something similar to the air NZ logo. It is easy to relate it to NZ

Why do we need a flag at all?

They only exist to rally troops around on battlefields - can't see the need for that personally.

Certainly can't see the point of changing it.

What annoys me, is if you submit a flag design, and your design happens to be chosen, you don't get paid a cent for that design. You have to sign it over to the government for free.Yet they spending millions on this, so there are people making a lot of money out of it, just not the person who ends up designing the flag.

Surely some form of consideration should be paid to the winner, as it totally devalues the time and design that someone put into the work. Not sure what would be a good amount, but based on the amount of money being spend just to decide whether, and none of this is being spent on the actual design, you wonder if they have got their priorities right. Wouldn't it be better to spend that money to commission some of the best designers in the world to come up with a design. The big companies can sometimes spend many hundreds, or not millions on their branding.

If we actually had a shortlist of professional designs of flags we like, before making the decision, it would make a big difference as to whether we can decide if we need a new flag or not. We could then vote for the flag we like the best.

But who cares what it is? It's a piece of cloth on a stick. The whole concept is farcical now that we do not rally foot soldiers for large set piece battles. Let's be the first country to dispense with the whole idea.

Think of it as the logo of NZ Limited.

If a national flag is farcical, then so are trademarks, corporate logos and all other recognisable symbols of property and identity.

National Anthems on the other hand...
