Talkiet: Everyone would be better off if there were no further updates until the situation is perfectly clear. This won't happen because people want attention and ad impressions.

And maybe people want information about the situation because they have children at school in Upper Hutt! I certainly did, and for a very, very long time initially the only information I was getting was from the radio - so a lot of people were in the dark. Nothing to do with attention, but with information since it was so scarce.

Information good.... Made up information to fill a vacuum. Bad.

Turns out I called it..

Talkiet:
SOunds potentially tragic/bad, but the initial reports of these things are often very very wrong.

Hope it's not as bad as the initial guesses by news media.

I can't decide whether I'm happy I am right basically all the time when I lambaste the media for this sort of thing, or sad that someone with no connection to the event and no information can tell virtually all of the time when the media are making stuff up, or deliberately reporting eyewitness testimony that they must have near zero confidence in.

Cheers - N

And some of the stuff that they do decide to report live is just bizare - as though they didn't vet what the person was going to talk about before hand.

Could've been worse I suppose.
We didn't have a news helicopter with a crazed sounding reporter on board yelling totally nonsensical rubbish for several hours.

I was surprised the media got the town, the sex of the offender and the fact he had a gun correct.

I have noticed the rise of click buttons in "news" stories that say "Where you there? Do you know anything? Tell us here!"

Ridiculous.

I can't quite believe the moronity of people, especially a particular 3 News reporter, who seem to think that a taser should have been used - as if it's an appropriate or even effective weapon in an active shooter situation.

Right, and who is going to take that job on? Maybe the reporter should have a go next time

These days media simply must 'go live' to someone on location.

It doesn't matter if they have anyone to talk to who has cogent, relevant or any information.  It doesn't matter if good audio quality is available as long as they go live on location.

Unless said location is a regional town, in which case going live on location to the nearest of Auckland Wellington or Christchurch will suffice.

For a NZ news story it's preferable for the interviewee to be a reporter employed by the same TV network, who knows nothing about the situation, and even less about grammar of spoken English, despite English being their first language.

For an international story any overseas reporter will do as long as English is a second language for them, they have very strong accent, don't know to pause after speaking on an international call, and are using a very poor phone/Skype line.  Overseas reporters do seem to know stuff but that's acceptable as long as listeners can't actually understand what they are saying.

According to me, it was "a good shot".

We should now calculate how much he has cost the taxpayer over his lifetime and charge it against his estate as a debt.

Did you read that some stupid bint came out of the shop next to him and was getting him to put the gun down. Stupid cow, putting herself in harms way like that, the Police had no choice but to shoot him.

I really hope someone explains that to her.
