Generally I would agree but hanging, drawing and quartering is deemed so last century by the liberal hand-wringers.

Hey, I'm a liberal hand-wringer and proud of it! Just what is it you want to achieve? Satisfy your blood-lust for vengence or protect your loved ones by preventing this kind of thing from happening again? Stomping on the fanatics doesn't seem to be preventing the emergence of more fanatics, so maybe you need to look for a better solution. Of course these people need to be stopped when they start killing and any means available should be used to stop them, but what do you do after it is over? You can fantasize about ways of getting even or you can try to figure out what is causing people to follow this path and try to prevent them from making that choice in the first place. That is what liberal hand-wringers do.

I'm afraid that it's worse than that... when a group of people feel they have the power to stop everyone from harming them and their loved ones, they can (and do) ignore the feelings/wishes/attitudes of others, and steal & exploit whatever they can get away with. What's needed is for the wealthy & powerful to be *more* vulnerable, so that they need to be a bit more considerate. That's a fundamental principle of democracy, but democracy has been subverted into a choice between one group of rich & powerful and another.

Mark: Is that the default policy over in America ? It seems every time there is a terrorist or loony out with a gun it ends with the bad guy riddled with 100+ bullets!

Can they not at least try to bring them down with a sharp shooter so they can be questioned and put to trial ?

That last bit of nastiness involving the disability centre, the reports say the police fired 380 shots!

And then the police go on TV and say how they don't yet know why the people did it .....

(Personally I'm all for making them dead, but preferably after a trial)

These deaths-by-cop are an aspect of the overall gun situation in the US. The police are terrified. One was killed in the San Bernadino Planned Parenthood attack.

No cop wants to go home dead at the end of a shift. So when operating in a country where anyone can have a gun, you have to assume everyone has a gun. I can tell from many of the videos - especially in the dark / at night - the police are incredibly focused on not being injured or killed....and plugging an un-cooperative suspect 10 or 15 times until they stop breathing or moving pretty much guarantees you're going to hug your kids at bed time.

If people want police to ease up on the shooting of people for breathing funny, they have to face their gun addiction is a HUGE contributor.

Get rid of the guns.

But it seems too many Americans are too 'Homer Simpson' to work this out for themselves...and the addiction side of guns there sees them refuse to believe it when you explain it in small words and short sentences.

I stopped going to the US after 2007. It's just too insane.

The Founding Fathers must be turning in their graves at the mess their descendants have created in such a short space of time.

They might even consider they would have been better off staying with a monarchy. It could hardly have turned out worse.

Well... duh. Yet there's partisan opposition, with some nutty Republicans now stating that "mental illness" is the problem there, and that there needs to be legislation to stop the mentally ill from buying guns. Given that half of America is taking prozac - presumably prescribed after diagnosis - I wonder what the threshold defining "mental illness" may be. If those Republicans have their way, I guess the defining point, the line to never be crossed, is to be "nutty enough" to suggest that something far more radical needs to be done about the stupidly dangerous gun laws in the US.

WRT San Bernadino, the perpetrators flew in and out of the country which suggests that they weren't on any no-fly list, and even so it's being claimed that the two assault rifles were bought for them by a neighbourhood friend. AFAIK they never had any treatment or diagnosis for "mental health issues" either.

Oh - I've been told a million times not to exaggerate.
And please smack me for using "prozac" incorrectly/generically.
I believe that an accurate figure is that something like 10% of US citizens are currently taking SSRIs, for an average duration of about 2 years. How many have taken them (but no longer), then how many take other anti-depressants, who knows? But anyway, that's getting off topic, my point that there are (tens of) millions of Americans taking - or who have taken - psychoactive medication for treatment of mental health issues, whether rightly or wrongly diagnosed and prescribed.
The two San Bernadino "nutters" apparently weren't "mentally ill" so the Republican suggestion to ban sales of guns to people with mental illness wouldn't have been much use (despite seeming blindingly obvious at a very superficial level anyway), nor would the Obama suggestion to ban sales of guns to people on the no-fly list.
