unfortunately he cant see that and the fact the government is paying money over and above what EQC is paying out.

And Aucklanders (and everyone else) paid billions to restore your city after the quakes. People all over the country pay higher EQC levies to fund reinsurance because of the reconstruction of your city.

This "us vs them" mentality helps noone and just frankly reads poorly.

They don't take that much space! We have 1.4m people in Auckland, bugger all of who take public transport, and even less who would use this particular thing.

I don't argue it shouldn't be built, I argue there is too much waste valueable space.

This "thing" will let people ride one train from Henderson to Manakau, Onehunga to Britomart then through to Papakura.

The CRL will be the pumping heart in the centre of the Auckland commuter rail system. I already use rail most days.

The stats make it clear that train ridership is growing rapidly (now over 16 million rides / year) and more people are using rail every year. Total public transport rides in a year - all modes is now close to 85 million. That's an everage 50 rides each for each man, woman and child in the city every year...and growing by double digits even now.....and the CRL isn't built yet.

This is about the future. I know some people can't see past next week. But someone has to. When talking about infrastructure you have to look decades ahead...and in only 14 years there will be 2.2 million in Auckland....and it won't be stopping there.

The CRL is already 4 decades late.

Imagine if it connected to the airport like in other First World Cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, San Francisco, London... the list goes on!

EQC repaired the residential homes, insurance repaired the businesses who insured themselves. yes, Govt has contributed to the infrastructure. This isn't the only EQ disaster.

Its not us vs them. Unless those affected are the advantaged and the undamaged (yet) are the disadvantaged. Its not me talking us vs them . Like you, I am paying more, I am also paying more rates which will exceed my repairs. Its a national issue, not an us vs them

And we all pay more insurance due to EQC and chch insurance payouts... Now I'm in Waikato and get benifit from neither, but still happy to contribute to the growth of this amazing country.

Calm down people, we're all in this together, for the future of our kids/grandkids and who knows where they may end up living?

Of course the Govt also gets back a lot of money from GST spent from EQC repairs.

EQC money isn't tax money. It is insurance money.

The actual money the Govt has spent is vastly less than the the figures they claim.

It is probably around $2-3 billion net and nowhere near what has been claimed.

That is still a lot of money. It is about the same they have promised Auckland for the train loop.

Which was exactly my point in my post last night where, as a Wellington resident, I pointed out that I don't mind paying towards Chch rebuild or this rail-link.

Like it or not, Auckland is our biggest city and the most vital for our economy. In order for NZ to thrive Auckland has to thrive.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

IMHO Auckland should pay a fuel tax to fund roading and transport. When fuel in lots of areas of Auckland & Waikato is already 20c - 30c per litre less than the national price paid in places such as Wellington due to discounting it's not as though anybody would even notice.

Those us us outside Auckland are subsidising both your public transport and roading infrastructure (which I'm sure most people wouldn't disagree with on principal) but now we're even subsidising your petrol.

I'm quite sure that my Auckland taxes paid quite allot towards Wellington's electric rail system over the years while Auckland's stayed in the steam age and was close to extinction.. I'm sure if Auckland had been the seat of government we would have had a 1st world rail system back in the 1930s.. About 30 years ago there was a couple of cents added to fuel prices here to help subsidize Auckland's transport system but I suspect it got gobbled up with other things..

It also provides some detail on what exactly is planned re Akl transport and trying to address a complicated/expensive and decades long issue - which if not sorted will be a nett drag on all of NZ..
